The Indian team beat defending champions Pakistan in a thrilling final to lift the Blind Cricket World Cup trophy in Cape Town, South Africa on December 7. Holders Pakistan had set India a daunting target 390 runs and the Indian batsmen achieved the goal with two balls spare.

At a felicitation function held here yesterday, Sonowal handed the cheques to the players.

"I congratulate the players for winning the World Cup. We are proud of them. By dint of their hard work and dedication, they have made us proud," Sonowal said after presenting the cash rewards to the blind players.

Cabinet Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Thawar Chand Gehlot said that his ministry will also give R2 lakh to each of the players.

The cricket champs yesterday also met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who told them that they had not only brought laurels to India, but had also inspired many physically challenged people through their feat.

PM Modi was presented a special cricket ball which is used in blind cricket. He requested the players to sign on the ball, saying that he would present it to a museum in a cricket club.
