The Mhaske family was preparing for the marriage of their 27-year-old son Kishor. Talking to mid-day, a teary Shantabai Mhaske, mother of the to-be groom, said that she, along with her husband, had gone to Hanuman Nagar to complete the last moment shopping for yesterday’s Haldi ceremony when the incident took place.

“A lot of our relatives were supposed to come. We were short of clothes and other things; that’s why we went to Hanuman Nagar to shop for them,” said Shantabai. The to-be groom Kishor said that the family had stored jewellery worth Rs 1 lakh, other valuables and clothes along with cash of R40,000 — all of which were burnt to ashes during the inferno.

“We had bought several things. It was a house that was hosting a wedding, so you can imagine the things that we had stored. There was nobody in the house. Had someone been there, we would’ve at least got time to grab the essentials and make a run for it, but we couldn’t even do that. All that is left is ashes,” said Kishor.

“We are left with nothing but we will go ahead with the wedding. We are satisfied that nobody from the family sustained any injuries in the incident. All are here with us to support us in this difficult time, including our neighbours,” said Shantabai.
