Mumbai: Cleaner uses cellphone to spy on women at loo in Andheri lounge

The weekend ended on a bad note for quite a few women who were enjoying a night out at a rooftop lounge in Andheri (West) on Sunday, when they realised that a mobile phone had secretly been filming them during visits to the washroom.

There was a further twist when the suspected culprit, a bathroom cleaner rushed to snatch the phone once it was discovered, but instead fell and hit his head on the floor. The phone was found at Sheesha Sky Lounge in Oshiwara around 9 pm last night, when a college student came out of the washroom and told another woman waiting in the queue that there was some object plastered to the wall right opposite the commode.

The second woman went in and spotted the object and saw that it had a flashing light as well. She immediately suspected that it was a mobile phone filming women in the toilet. She called her husband, who yanked the phone off the wall to take a closer look.

At this point, the bathroom cleaner rushed to the spot and attempted to snatch the phone and make off with it, but the woman’s husband grabbed his arm, causing the cleaner to slip and hit his head on the floor. The cleaner was rushed to the hospital with a head injury, while patrons at the lounge called the police.

An eyewitness said, “When we checked the mobile, we saw a video of my friend in the loo. There was a video of the woman who went in after her as well. There were videos of others who had gone in before them also. When we were about to complain to the police, the lounge management tried to discourage us, saying it would cause a scandal.

But why should we keep quit when our friend was a victim?” The PI on duty from Amboli police station, Shankar Yeram said, “We have recovered the phone but it got damaged in the scuffle. We saw the tape on the wall, where the phone was placed.

We have not checked the contents of the phone yet, but have sent it for analysis. Whether we find any videos or not, we will register a case under the IT Act against the culprit since it was wrong to place the phone in the washroom in the first place.”
