It's no secret that Hollywood filmmaker Christopher Nolan is headed to Mumbai on March 31 as part of the event, Reframing The Future Of Film, that will focus on the need to preserve the film medium. Before the auteur's date with India, Shivendra Singh Dungarpur's Film Heritage Foundation has organised a two-day workshop on the subject in the city.

Given that Mumbai houses the second biggest entertainment industry in the world, the organisers felt that the benefits of the photochemical film should be introduced to the younger generation of artistes and aspiring filmmakers. They have roped in international experts David Walsh and Mick Newnham to conduct the workshop on March 9 and 10, which will offer the participants a hands-on training in film handling, repair and conservation treatments.

A source from the organising team says, "Hindi cinema is a rich treasure trove, but unfortunately many old films are lost in today's age of digitisation. It is important that art enthusiasts and aspiring filmmakers understand the importance of the photochemical film and learn ways to conserve the gems that have been made in the earlier decades."

Having worked at the Imperial War Museums since 1975, Walsh has established himself as an expert in the preservation and digitisation of films and video. Newnham, who was associated with the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia for 29 years, engaged in original research on conservation of audio-visual media. The endeavour is in association with the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF).
