Newly married woman burnt alive after dowry demand of Rs 1 lakh not met
The victim had revealed to her father that her brother-in-law doused her in petrol and her husband set her on fire
Yamunanagar (Haryana): A newly married woman was allegedly burned to death after her family was unable to pay a dowry of Rs 1 lakh. The alleged incident occurred in Teli Majra village in Haryana's Yamunanagar.
According to India Today, the victim, identified as Sonam, succumbed to death in PGI Hospital, where she was admitted for severe burn injuries. Following which the victim's father registered a complaint with the Haryana Police against the in-laws for allegedly killing his daughter after their dowry demand was not met.
In the complaint, the father had alleged that on June 10, his daughter's husband and brother-in-law came to his house to drop her off and asked him to send her back only when Rs 1 lakh was arranged.
However, the father arranged some money and sent the daughter back to her in-laws with her husband and brother-in-law the same day. The next day, he received a call from the in-laws saying that his daughter is admitted to PGI Hospital after suffering burn injuries.
When the father visited the daughter in the hospital, she revealed that her brother-in-law doused her in petrol and her husband set her on fire. But the in-laws tried to cover up their crime saying that his daughter caught fire when she was trying to disperse bees with fire on terrace.
A case has been registered against the victim's in-laws based on the father's complaint. The accused is at large and the investigation is underway.
In another incident, a woman was allegedly beaten up by her husband and in-laws over dowry. The incident came to light after the video of the assault went viral.
"I was beaten by my in-laws and my husband. They have been demanding dowry and saying that if I cannot give them money then I have to give divorce to my husband. They are also demanding a motorcycle", the victim stated.
The victim got married earlier this year. Her in-laws soon allegedly started demanding dowry from her. "It was a love marriage and we have been married for just two months. My husband, his brother and their parents beat me yesterday evening," the woman added.
