On this day in 1971, India's batting legend Sunil Gavaskar scored the first of his 34 Test centures when he scored 116 against West Indies at Georgetown. We look at the numerous records set by the former Indian batsman.

>> Sunil Gavaskar was the first cricketer to score over 10,000 Test runs


>> He held the record for most Test centuries (34) until Sachin Tendulkar broke it in 2005.

>> He scored the highest runs by a debutant (774). He has also scored the most runs by any player in a series.

>> He is the only cricketer to score 4 consecutive hundreds in two different venues - Wankhede stadium and Port of Spain

>> He is the only cricketer with 58 hundred partnerships with a total of 18 different cricketers

>> He holds the joint record with Ponting and Warner to score hundreds in both Test innings on three occassions.

>> He was the first Indian fielder to get over 100 catches in Tests.

>> He was the first cricketer to play 100 consecutive Tests.

>> He was named Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1980.
