Disgruntled Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) loyalists in Nashik continued their protest on Thursday, expressing anger over the denial of civic poll tickets to long-time party members and their allotment to candidates who recently joined the party, news agency PTI reported. The protesters held demonstrations outside the BJP office at Nashik Road, shouting slogans against Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Rahul Dhikle. When city party president Sunil Kedar attempted to pacify the activists, they ‘gheraoed’ him, demanding explanations for being denied candidature for the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) Elections. They questioned the basis on which others were granted poll tickets and accused the party of giving them false assurances. In a symbolic gesture, some protesters presented carrots to Kedar, highlighting their grievance over the party’s promises, PTI reported. Later, activists from Union Minister Ramdas Athawale’s Republican Party of India (Athawale) also arrived at the BJP office, raising slogans against the ruling Mahayuti alliance for allegedly sidelining their party during seat-sharing talks. Following these incidents, the BJP office was locked, and Kedar exited amid police protection. Security has been heightened around the office, and authorities said the situation is currently under control, PTI reported. The protests follow earlier incidents this week. On Wednesday, party loyalist Balasaheb Ghuge raised slogans against MLA Seema Hiray and even slapped himself in protest over being denied a ticket for Ward 29. On December 30, the final day to file nominations, angry party workers reportedly chased Kedar’s vehicle while he was distributing AB forms. Meanwhile, a total of 2,079 nominations have been declared valid for 122 seats across 31 wards of the Nashik civic body after scrutiny concluded late Wednesday night. Of the 2,356 nominations received, 277 were rejected for various reasons. The last date to withdraw nominations is January 2, with the final list of candidates scheduled for release on January 3. In the Malegaon Municipal Corporation (MMC), 808 nominations were received for 84 seats across 21 wards. Of these, 94 nominations were rejected, leaving 714 candidates in the fray. Nagpur civic polls: Long-time BJP workers rebel, to contest as independents after ticket denial Upset over being denied tickets by the BJP despite years of loyal service, several party workers have decided to contest the upcoming Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) elections as independent candidates. The aspirants allege that the denial of tickets to long-standing party members in favour of turncoats or newcomers has sparked discontent among cadres, prompting resignations in the home turf of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. Elections to 29 civic bodies in Maharashtra, including Nagpur, are scheduled for January 15. The NMC has a total of 151 seats, with the BJP contesting 143 seats and supporting eight candidates from the Shiv Sena. Congress is contesting all 151 seats independently, while Ajit Pawar’s NCP is fielding candidates in over 90 seats. Among those rebelling is Vinayak Dehankar, a long-time BJP worker and husband of former mayor Archana Dehankar, who was denied a ticket from Ward 17. He has resigned from the party and will contest as an independent. However, his wife opposed his move, stating she would campaign solely for BJP candidates. The couple’s disagreement even led her to temporarily move to her brother’s residence to “avoid disputes.” "In order to avoid any more disputes at home, I decided to go to my brother's house for a few days. This is not a family dispute, but an ideological fight," she said. Similarly, in Ward 16 (D), around 80 BJP workers along with ward president Gajanan Nishitkar resigned after the latter was denied ticket by the party. Another seasoned local leader of the BJP and a six-time corporator, Sunil Agrawal, is also fighting the upcoming election as an independent candidate after being denied a ticket from Ward 14, which went to a woman candidate. Meanwhile, Ninad Dixit, a young entrepreneur and sportsman with strong RSS roots, is in the fray as an independent from Ward 22, located in Mahal area, which also houses the Sangh headquarters. 01 January,2026 04:15 PM IST | Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Maharashtra) | mid-day online correspondentIndia’s aviation regulator, Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), on Thursday issued a show-cause notice to the Air India cockpit crew for operating multiple flights between Delhi and Tokyo, news agency IANS reported. In its notice, the regulator stated that Air India is operating multiple flights despite being aware of safety and compliance lapses and sought a response in two weeks. The notice pertains to operations of flight AI-357 from Delhi to Tokyo and AI-358 from Tokyo to Delhi, IANS reported. “The Minimum Equipment List (MEL) applicable to the aircraft was incompatible,” the DGCA notice said. Air India is yet to reply to the notice, which further mentioned that this was not an isolated incident and that similar issues had been detected in other sectors in the past. The aviation regulator has also asked the pilots to explain why action should not be initiated against them under the Aircraft Rules and Civil Aviation Requirements (CAR). In November 2025, following an engine shutdown on Air India’s Delhi-Mumbai flight, DGCA had called for a probe into the incident. The Mumbai-bound Air India B777-300ER aircraft returned to Delhi shortly after take-off due to a technical issue and landed safely in the national capital. “The AIC 887 (Delhi-Mumbai) was involved in an air turnback, as during flap retraction after take-off, the flight crew observed low engine oil pressure on Engine No. 2 (right-hand engine),” DGCA mentioned. Soon after the take-off, the engine oil pressure dropped to zero. Following the procedure, the crew shut down the No 2 engine, and the aircraft landed safely at Delhi, it added. The DGCA, while highlighting the issues, noted that “the inspection/rectification is in progress”. The regulator further said, “The incident would be investigated by the Permanent Investigation Board of the Airline under the supervision of Director Air Safety (NR), DGCA”. Dense fog leads to 128 flight cancellations at Delhi airport Flight and train operations across several parts of the country were severely affected last week due to dense fog, leaving thousands of passengers stranded. A total of 128 flights, including 64 arrivals and 64 departures, were cancelled at airport. Additionally, eight flights were diverted, while more than 30 flights were delayed due to poor visibility conditions. (With inputs from IANS)
01 January,2026 03:45 PM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentBangladesh-based terror groups Harkat-ul-Jihad Islami (HuJI) and Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen are increasingly using their proxies while carrying out activities in India, news agency IANS reported, citing intelligence agencies. The two terror groups are also looking to create homegrown outfits in India so that Bangladesh has the deniability factor. The terrorism by Bangladeshi agencies is similar to what the Lashkar-e-Tayiba or Jaish-e-Mohammad have been doing in India, IANS reported, citing intelligence agencies. The Lashkar-e-Tayiba uses groups such as ‘The Resistance Front’ for operations in Jammu and Kashmir. In the case of the Jaish-e-Mohammad, the proxies are the People’s Anti-Fascist Front (PAAF) and the Kashmir Tigers (KT). While these terror groups are allegedly just proxies, both the Lashkar-e-Tayiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad are trying to pass them off as homegrown outfits. ISI and Jamaat-e-Islami Intelligence agencies said the ISI and Jamaat-e-Islami have significantly increased their focus on these terror groups. Most of its cadres who were in jail were released without any explanation following the ouster of ex-Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, IANS reported. Reports also indicate that they have been given a free hand to operate in the country, but the message is that all the attacks should be focused on India. While the immediate threat persists in bordering states, officer say that these groups are capable of operating in both north and south India. An Intelligence Bureau officer said, "They have been witnessing a new trend where the HuJi and JMB are concerned. Their modules across India are operating under different aliases, and this is a clear strategy to dodge the security agencies." Assam and Tripura police bust Imam Mahamude Kafila (IMK) terror module Assam and Tripura police in a joint operation busted a module that was called the Imam Mahamude Kafila (IMK). This is a proxy of the JMB, revealed the probe by the police. Officers said that this module has been around but was reactivated recently to carry out attacks in India. JMB also has other Indian affiliates, namely the Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen India and Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Hindustan. The HuJI, too, has several proxies that are in the process of being activated in India ahead of the West Bengal elections, stated officers. The terror outfit had in the past operated alongside the Indian Mujahideen. It also has proxies such as Harkat-ul-Ansar (HuL) and the Asif Reza Commando Force (ARCF). This is the same group that claimed responsibility for the 2002 attack on the American Center in Kolkata. This is a strategy that has been used by terror groups based out of Pakistan in the past. Officers said one of the main challenges for agencies is the delay in investigations after a module is busted. Operating under different names is intended to confuse security agencies, as it takes time for the trail to lead back to the parent terror group. Officers also said that having multiple proxies for each terror group was a tactic suggested by the ISI to ensure no direct trail leads back to Bangladesh in the event of a terror attack. They also stated that Pakistan has resorted to similar tactics in the past to deflect blame, and a comparable approach is now being pushed in Bangladesh to ensure the country does not come under scrutiny from international bodies such as the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). 01 January,2026 03:43 PM IST | New Delhi | mid-day online correspondentFlight services at the Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) in Bhubaneswar were disrupted on Thursday morning due to dense fog, an airport officer said. Due to poor visibility on the runway in the morning from around 6.30 am, led to the diversion and delay of several flights, causing inconvenience to passengers. For operation of a flight, the runway visual range (RVR) should be around 550 meters. At around 6.30 am this morning, the RVR went down to 50 metres, for which five flights were diverted to Kolkata (two flights), and Raipur (three flights), said BPIA director Prasanna Pradhan. Out of the diverted flights, three flights from New Delhi, one from Bangalore and another from Chennai, he said. Similarly, a flight to Dehradun and another small aircraft to Jeypore, Utkela and Jamshedpur from Bhubaneswar were also delayed due to the fog, he stated. The director said the visibility level improved after 10.30 am, and one flight diverted to Kolkata has landed here. Later, the flight service resumed normal operation. Necessary arrangements have been made for the passengers affected due to the delay of the flights, Pradhan said. This was the second day during this season, the flight operation at Bhubaneswar airport was affected by fog conditions, he added. 01 January,2026 02:26 PM IST | New Delhi | ANIThe first day of 2026 saw a marginal drop in prices of gold and silver across major cities like Mumbai, Delhi and other major cities. Earlier on Wednesday, precious metals, especially silver, took a breather. The downfall came after a run‑up to a record high followed by aggressive profit‑booking. The price of gold in Mumbai on the first day of the year was recorded at Rs 1,35,020 for 10 grams of 24-carat gold. The marginal drop in prices amid the year-ending celebration also experienced a sheer demand for the yellow metal across the city. Talking about the global markets, the volatility remained elevated amid geopolitical tensions such as US strikes on Venezuela’s dock facilities and Chinese naval exercises that bolstered safe‑haven demand earlier in the week, as per IANS. On the other hand, silver futures for March 2026 on MCX tumbled 4.63 per cent to Rs 2,39,395 per kg, and gold futures for February 2026 slipped 0.51 per cent to Rs 1,35,973 per 10 grams in morning trade on Wednesday. Gold prices in Mumbai While the price of 24-carat gold in Mumbai stood at Rs. 1,35,020, the 22-carat gold in Mumbai was recorded at Rs 1,23,780 for 10-grams. Gold prices in Delhi Apart from Mumbai, the national capital also experienced a marginal decline in prices of gold. The price of 24-carat gold in Delhi on Thursday was recorded at Rs 1,35,160 for 10 grams. Whereas the price of 22-carat gold was recorded at Rs 1,23,920 for 10 grams. Domestic spot gold prices have surged over 76 per cent year‑to‑date and international gold prices over 70 per cent in 2025, on track for their strongest annual performance since 1979. Rahul Kalantri, VP Commodities, Mehta Equities Ltd, while highlighting the price movements of gold, said, "Gold and silver prices witnessed sharp volatility on Tuesday, rebounding strongly from intraday lows as rising geopolitical tensions boosted safe-haven demand. Setbacks in the Russia-Ukraine peace process emerged after Russia alleged a Ukrainian drone attack on the President’s residence, as per IANS. Silver prices Silver has support at the Rs 2,45,150-Rs 2,42,780 zone and resistance at the Rs 2,54,810-Rs 2,56,970 zone, he added. Aggressive central bank buying, expectations of US Fed rate cuts, concerns over the impact of US tariffs, geopolitical tensions, and robust inflows into gold and silver ETFs drove the gold and silver prices this year. A recent report from Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd. said that persistent inventory drawdowns across key global hubs, weakening arbitrage between Shanghai and COMEX, and repeated delivery pressures have exposed the limited availability of deliverable silver. 01 January,2026 11:53 AM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentStudents from the northeast held a candlelight march here to protest the killing of 24-year-old Anjel Chakma from Tripura and demanded justice, raising slogans against alleged racial discrimination. Under the banner of the 'Unified Tripura Students Association' (UTSA), students from various institutions in Dehradun gathered outside Gandhi Park on Wednesday and marched to Ghantaghar (clock tower) with candles in their hands. Some students from other states also joined the protest. Holding banners with Chakma's picture, the students chanted slogans such as "Stop Racism", "We Are Indians", and "We Want Justice." Churanta Tripura, general secretary of the UTSA, Dehradun, alleged that police were trying to suppress the case and therefore not treating it as one involving racism. He also alleged that the police asked them to stop the protest march, citing traffic issues due to New Year celebrations. Chakma, a final-year MBA student at a private university here, was allegedly attacked and seriously injured with a knife and a brass knuckle by some youths on December 9. He died on December 26 after being hospitalised for 17 days. While Chakma's family and friends have termed the incident a result of racist remarks, the Dehradun police said their investigation so far has not found any evidence of racial discrimination. Dehradun SSP Ajay Singh said that students from all over the country, including more than 2,000 from the northeast, come to Dehradun to study. He said about 250 students from Tripura alone are studying in the city. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies.
