A woman gets her fertility blood test results. She sees one word - AMH followed by a number. Then comes the inevitable search: Is my AMH normal? Is it too low? Can I still get pregnant?
For many women, this one number has started to feel like a verdict on their fertility. But according to Dr. Ripal Modi, IVF Specialist in Abu Dhabi, it is far more nuanced than that.
Anti-M&uuml;llerian Hormone, or AMH, has become one of the most commonly discussed fertility markers among women planning pregnancy, those trying to conceive, and women considering egg freezing or IVF. The reason is simple: AMH gives doctors an indication of a woman&rsquo;s ovarian reserve, or the approximate number of eggs remaining in the ovaries.
But there is an important distinction that every woman should know: AMH is not a test that can tell you whether you can or cannot become pregnant.
&ldquo;AMH is an important piece of the fertility puzzle, but it is not a fertility score. A low AMH does not mean pregnancy is impossible, just as a normal AMH does not guarantee easy conception. We need to look at the woman as a whole, including her age, menstrual history, ovarian reserve, partner&rsquo;s fertility and other factors,&rdquo; says Dr. Ripal Modi.
So, what does a low AMH actually mean?
A lower AMH level can indicate that the ovarian reserve is lower than expected. This information can be particularly useful when planning fertility treatment because it can help doctors anticipate how the ovaries may respond to stimulation during IVF.
However, low AMH does not automatically mean that a woman cannot conceive naturally.
This is where many women become unnecessarily worried. AMH primarily tells us about egg quantity, not egg quality. Egg quality is strongly influenced by age, which is why a woman&rsquo;s age remains an important part of any fertility assessment.
A woman with a low AMH may still conceive, while another woman with a seemingly reassuring AMH may experience difficulty getting pregnant for completely different reasons.
Is a high AMH always good news?
Not necessarily.
A higher AMH can indicate a greater ovarian reserve, but very high levels may also be associated with conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). In such cases, the number needs to be considered alongside menstrual patterns, symptoms and ultrasound findings.
In other words, there is no single perfect AMH number that guarantees fertility.
Should every woman get an AMH test?
AMH testing can be helpful in the right situation. It may be recommended as part of a fertility assessment, before IVF, when considering egg freezing, or when there are concerns about ovarian reserve.
But getting an AMH test simply to find out whether you are &ldquo;fertile&rdquo; can sometimes create more questions than answers.
Fertility is influenced by several factors including age, ovulation, the health of the fallopian tubes, sperm health and the couple&rsquo;s overall reproductive history. AMH is just one part of that picture.
Women who are increasingly planning motherhood later in life, understanding this distinction is particularly important. Fertility conversations should be about more than a laboratory number; they should be about understanding reproductive health and making informed decisions about the future.
The bottom line? Don&rsquo;t let one number define your fertility.
An AMH report can provide valuable information, but its meaning depends on the individual. If the result is lower or higher than expected, speaking with a fertility specialist can help put the number into perspective and determine whether any further evaluation or action is needed.
