What begins as a small-town boy&rsquo;s desire for better furniture-and a hunch about Facebook-has grown into a Rs 340 crore furniture empire serving thousands of customers every month. Raghunandan Saraf, Founder and CEO of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.insaraf.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Saraf Furniture</a>, shares how he took a 40-year-old family legacy and gave it a digital makeover, one solid Sheesham wood piece at a time.
The Rs 50,000 Bet
&ldquo;I was studying in Delhi for my post-graduation in 2009, staying in a rented place. The furniture was always shady and hopeless,&rdquo; Raghunandan recalls with a laugh. Coming from a family with a furniture background, he knew good furniture could be affordable-yet nobody around him was using the right kind. Everyone was settling for plywood, furniture that &ldquo;did not add any value.&rdquo;
That dissonance planted a seed. But it was another observation that gave it wings. &ldquo;2009 and 2010 was when Facebook was gaining traction in India. Orkut was fading away, and Facebook was taking over,&rdquo; he says. He realised two things simultaneously: the largest demographic segment of India&rsquo;s population-young adults finishing college, getting jobs, getting married, and setting up homes-was about to enter the furniture-buying phase. And this very segment was adopting Facebook aggressively. &ldquo;It would be easy to reach them compared to traditional methods.&rdquo;
So in 2014, with just Rs 50,000, Raghunandan launched&nbsp;<a href="https://www.insaraf.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Saraf Furniture</a>&nbsp;as an independent, direct-to-consumer (D2C) brand. His father was sceptical about selling furniture online. But Raghunandan had a vision-and a makeshift internet connection on his roof in Sardarshahar, Rajasthan, to execute it.
A Family Legacy, Reimagined
Raghunandan&rsquo;s family has been in the wood business for over four decades. His grandfather started with a small hardware shop in Sardarshahar, gradually buying and selling wood from village to village. By 1991, his father had joined in, opening a shop to sell wooden products like beds, chairs, and tables. By 1998, the family had even started exporting.
Growing up watching this legacy, Raghunandan knew the product and the market inside out. &ldquo;I knew the product and market, and all I had to do was to customise the furniture according to the demand and consumer needs,&rdquo; he says. But customisation wasn&rsquo;t just about design-it was about bringing a traditional, unorganised industry into the organised sector.
The first challenge was infrastructure. &ldquo;There was no internet here,&rdquo; he says. &ldquo;We had a dial-up connection-100 kbps, not mbps-which would open Facebook in about 15 minutes.&rdquo; He reached out to Airtel and local networking people to create a makeshift broadband solution on his roof. Then came the cataloguing-photographing products, creating an online catalogue, and marketing on Facebook. &ldquo;Being placed at the right time, it sort of worked for us,&rdquo; he says modestly.
Cultivating Trust in a Digital World
But selling furniture online in 2014 wasn&rsquo;t easy. Customers loved browsing products online but were hesitant to buy. &ldquo;Buying online was not a thing,&rdquo; Raghunandan admits. The entry of giants like Amazon and Flipkart into India changed the game-not by selling furniture, but by cultivating a culture where Indian consumers felt safe buying online. &ldquo;They cultivated this culture in the Indian consumer that it&rsquo;s okay to buy online. Your money is safe, you get the right product.&rdquo;
Yet furniture posed a unique problem. Unlike an iPhone, a bed couldn&rsquo;t be standardised. &ldquo;If you order a bed from us, you won&rsquo;t know what to expect.&rdquo; So Raghunandan opened a small experience studio in Bengaluru-the &ldquo;best city in the country,&rdquo; as he calls it. The result? Conversion increased by 40 times. &ldquo;Not 40 percent, but 40 times.&rdquo;
Today,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.insaraf.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Saraf Furniture</a>&nbsp;has experience centres in Bengaluru, Delhi, Hyderabad, and Surat, with more on the horizon. But Raghunandan insists the brand will always remain online-first. &ldquo;Having experience stores helps in conversions. People who come to our stores eventually buy the product online. But these outlets are important because they act as support centres to the online model,&rdquo; he explains.
Transparency That Builds Trust
One of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.insaraf.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Saraf Furniture</a>&rsquo;s most innovative trust-building initiatives is a programme where potential customers can visit existing customers&rsquo; homes to see the furniture in real settings.
&ldquo;We realised we had just four stores, and they increased our conversion big time,&rdquo; Raghunandan says. &ldquo;But there were customers in other cities who wanted to see the products too.&rdquo; Instead of opening more stores with heavy capital expenditure, he tapped into his existing customer base. &ldquo;We contact consenting customers who already have the furniture. They invite potential customers to their homes. Both customers get a benefit-the buyer sees the product, and the existing customer gets a coupon based on the new customer&rsquo;s order value.&rdquo; He calls it a &ldquo;win-win-win&rdquo; for all three parties. The programme reflects what Raghunandan believes is a core entrepreneurial truth: &ldquo;When you work on something day in and day out for decades, ideas just keep coming. Need is the trigger for discovery.&rdquo;
Craftsmanship Meets Consumer Demand
With a product range spanning from Rs 999 decor pieces to beds costing upwards of Rs 2.5 lakh,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.insaraf.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Saraf Furniture</a>&nbsp;caters to a wide spectrum of customers. But how does the brand balance traditional Sheesham wood craftsmanship with the demands of modern, tech-driven consumers?
Raghunandan&rsquo;s answer is refreshingly grounded. &ldquo;Eighty to 85 percent, maybe 90 percent of customers are looking for a combination of utility and price. When the product meets the utility they&rsquo;re looking for and their price expectation, people buy.&rdquo; Only about 10 percent are truly design-centric, and even among them, price remains a 50 percent factor in decision-making. &ldquo;If there is one factor which drives every customer, it becomes easier to apply your strategy to that.&rdquo; And that strategy is simple: keep updating the catalogue with upcoming trends-metal-wood combinations, live-edge furniture-while ensuring affordability remains the cornerstone.
The Road Ahead: More Than Just Furniture
From 2,500 SKUs at launch to over 6,000 today,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.insaraf.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Saraf Furniture</a>&nbsp;has come a long way. But Raghunandan isn&rsquo;t stopping there. The brand plans to double its catalogue to 10,000 SKUs this year, adding categories that complement furniture-mattresses, table lamps, bed runners-to become a one-stop shop. &ldquo;People who buy a bed will buy a mattress as well. Then we can excite them to buy a table lamp, a bed runner,&rdquo; he explains. &ldquo;The category is not going to be any haphazard category just to sell on the website.&rdquo;
With 10 factories, over 4,000 orders fulfilled every month, and a turnover of Rs 340 crore,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.insaraf.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Saraf Furniture</a>&nbsp;is already a formidable player in India&rsquo;s furniture market. But for Raghunandan, the journey is far from over. &ldquo;The best thing that one can do is to keep going,&rdquo; he says with characteristic simplicity.
One Piece of Advice
When asked what he would tell aspiring entrepreneurs, Raghunandan&rsquo;s answer is humble yet profound: &ldquo;The best thing that one can do is to keep going.&rdquo; It&rsquo;s advice born from experience-from a small town with no internet, a sceptical father, and a Rs 50,000 bet that paid off beyond imagination.
