During his school days, Manna Dey was famous for the pranks he used to mastermind. It was during his school days when he realised his passion for singing.

Manna Dey's birth name is Prabodh Chandra Dey

Apart from Hindi, he did playback singing in Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, Malayalam, Kannada, and Assamese films

He also sung songs in Bhojpuri, Awadhi, Magahdh and Punjabi among other languages

Dey made his debut as a playback singer in a 1942 film titled Tamanna

He recorded more than 4000 songs during an illustrious career

The legendary singer was honoured with the Padma Shri in 1971, the Padma Bhushan in 2005 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2007

Dey married Sulochana Kumaran from Kerala in 1953. Sulochana died in Bangalore in January 2012. She had been suffering from cancer

Having spent more than 50 years in Mumbai, Dey shifted to Bangalore, where he spent his last days

Dey's Bengali autobiography, Jiboner Jalsaghorey was published in 2005. The book has been translated in English (Memories Come Alive), Hindi (Yaden Jee Uthi) and Marathi (Jiboner Jalsaghorey)

Jibaner Jalsaghore, a documentary on Dey's life, was released in 2008

Dey even lent his voice for Madhushala composed by Late Harivansh Rai Bachchan
