Govinda and Sunita Ahuja met through his maternal uncle, Anand Singh. Sunita’s sister was married to Anand. The two met at their house, when Govinda stayed there for three years.
The two initially fought since they were two differing personalities. Govinda was extroverted and filmy, while Sunita was modern and outspoken. In addition, Sunita came from a well-to-do Punjabi family, while Govinda belonged to a humble background.
Eventually, their fights turned into attraction, and their relationship began secretly, away from family eyes. They would exchange love letters through Sunita's brother.
Sunita’s mother was initially against the relationship because Govinda was from a middle-class background. However, he assured Sunita he would make a name for himself in films. On the other hand, Govinda's mother was fond of Sunita and had also fortold that the two would end up marrying.
The couple tied the knot on 11 March 1987 in a private ceremony, when Govinda was only 24 years while Sunita was just 18. They kept their relationship secret because of Govinda's career.
They welcomed their first child, a daughter, Tina Ahuja (Narmmadaa), in 1989, followed by their second child, son Yashvardhan was born much later in 1997.
The two have been seen together standing like a rock by each other over the years. Sunita also manages aspects of his career and political commitments.
Govinda regretted keeping their marriage a secret and hence, on the occasion of their 25th anniversary, Govinda and Sunita had decided to re-marry each other by following all the rituals.
The family is often seen spending time together especially on festivals and special events, They have also made several appearances in the media together.
The two are often seem making appearances together and also post pictures from their vacations and holidays.
Over the years, Govinda has been linked with many actresses. However, his alleged love affairs with Neelam Kothari and Rani Mukerji has reportedly affected his relationship with his wife, Sunita Ahuja, the most.
Govinda was allegedly smitten by Neelam and even tried to mould his then-girlfriend, Sunita like Neelam and would often ask her to become like Neelam, which invariably enraged Sunita.
Sunita Ahuja had even decided to leave Govinda's house and had returned to her parents' home. However, they sorted their differences and got back together.
Recently, reports of divorce surfaced again, alleging that Sunita has filed for divorce, accusing her husband of cheating and cruelty.
Govinda's manager even confirmed that Sunita had filed for divorce a few months back and that now they are back and sorting out their differences.
