Still from 28 Days Later

After redefining modern horror in 2002, the 28 Days Later franchise returns with a new chapter that further explores its universe. This time, however, Danny Boyle has handed over the director’s chair to Nia DaCosta, marking a major creative shift for the upcoming installment, 28 Days Later: The Bone Temple.

Reflecting on the decision, Boyle expressed full confidence in DaCosta’s vision, calling her “the perfect choice” to carry forward the essence of the franchise. He said that both writer Alex Garland and he had been following DaCosta’s work closely and were particularly impressed by her bold reimagining of Candyman. Boyle noted that they recognised she had “serious horror chops and a genuine love for the original 28 Days Later.”

According to Boyle, DaCosta strikes a rare balance, bringing her own directorial voice while respecting the legacy of the franchise, all while pushing it into darker, more intense territory. “She honours what fans love about the franchise while making the new film her own, taking the series into even darker, more intense areas,” Boyle said, hinting that the new chapter will not rely solely on nostalgia but will instead evolve the mythology in unsettling new ways.

As 28 Days Later: The Bone Temple moves closer to release, Boyle’s comments suggest that this decision was not merely about passing the baton, but a leap of faith in a filmmaker he believes is worthy of carrying the franchise forward—promising a chapter that is darker, bolder, and more relentless than ever before.

What is 28 Days Later: The Bon Temple about?

The 2025 release 28 Years Later ends with young Spike (Alfie Williams) leaving for the mainland alone. After fleeing from the infected, he runs into Jimmy (Jack O'Connell), a strange figure wearing a tracksuit, gold chains, and an upside-down gold cross. Jimmy isn't alone, either,  he's backed by a similarly-dressed crew who prove themselves adept at slicing and dicing infected. Jimmy invites Spike to join them. Jimmy, as you might imagine, will play a major role in The Bone Temple.

The official synopsis reads: "Dr. Kelson finds himself in a shocking new relationship — with consequences that could change the world as they know it — and Spike's encounter with Jimmy Crystal becomes a nightmare he can't escape, In the world of The Bone Temple, the infected are no longer the greatest threat to survival — the inhumanity of the survivors can be stranger and more terrifying."

28 Days Later: The Bone Temple will be released in India by Sony Pictures Entertainment India on 16 January 2026.
