Rajinikanth’s Coolie has crossed Rs 400 crore worldwide in just four days but faces tough competition from Leo and Jailer to become the highest-grossing Tamil film
Still from Coolie
Rajinikanth-starrer Coolie was released in theatres on August 14 along with War 2. The Tamil action-thriller marked Rajinikanth's first collaboration with filmmaker Lokesh Kanagaraj. The film opened in theatres amid much hype, with the film earning over Rs 60 crore on its opening day alone. The film streamed past the 400 crore mark in a matter of four days worldwide. However, the film saw a dip on its first Monday, raising questions about whether it will be the all-time highest grosser of Tamil cinema. For this, the film will have to outpace Vijay's Leo and Rajini's previous film Jailer.
Coolie's box office sees a dip
Lokesh Kanagaraj's Coolie is eyeing the 500 crore mark worldwide within its opening week. If the film manages to reach the milestone in less than 10 days, then the film will break the records currently held by the filmmaker's previous release Leo (2023). However, at the current pace, it looks like it will be difficult for Coolie to match up with Leo and Jailer.
On Monday, Coolie earned Rs 12.15 crore nett in India, according to the Sacknilk report. With this, the domestic total of the film has reached Rs 206.67 crore. On Sunday, the film that also starred Shruti Haasan earned Rs 35.25 crore, making the Monday collections a 65.53 percent drop. Jailer, on the other hand, earned Rs 23.55 crore on its first Monday.
Rajinikanth’s Jailer wrapped up with Rs 606 crore globally, while Vijay’s Leo finished at Rs 605 crore. 2.0 still reigns as the highest-grossing Tamil film ever, yet Coolie’s early momentum has sparked chatter that it may be the one to finally rewrite the record books.
