Veteran filmmaker and music composer Gangai Amaran has grabbed headlines after his video went viral online. The younger brother of composer Ilaiyaraaja was seen at a public event in Chennai recently, where his behaviour turned disrespectful towards a fan. The incident took place during a commemoration for lyricist Vaali’s death anniversary in Chennai. The now viral video has led to significant social media criticism towards Amaran.

Gangai Amaran's clip goes viral

The clip has been widely shared and discussed on multiple social media platforms since November 2, 2025. Many users called the musician’s behaviour disrespectful and demanded an apology from the veteran.

In the video, Gangai Amaran is seen interacting with reporters while a fan is seen standing behind him. During the interaction, Amaran turns to the fan and says, “Come on, you speak.” The fan, who seemingly thought he was inviting him, steps forward to address the media. However, just then, Amaran moves aside and addresses the fan sharply, saying, “Is this how you stand behind when someone is talking?” The fan realises the situation and quietly moves away, visibly uncomfortable, as Amaran walks off.

Netizens react

Clips of the interaction have rapidly circulated online, sparking reactions from social media users. Many of the users pointed out the fan’s composed response in the situation. One of the comments read, “The way that guy handled the situation in a very humble way shows how mature that guy is.”

The incident also sparked a debate about the treatment of fans by public figures. One user even questioned, “That person standing behind him disturbed him? How?”

Similarly, many even demanded a public apology as more viewers engaged with the video clip.

For the unversed, Gangai Amaran is recognised for his contributions to Tamil cinema as a director, lyricist, and music composer in his longstanding career. His notable works include Karakatakkaran, Kozhi Koovuthu, and The Greatest of All Time. He has established himself as one of the most prominent contributors to the industry.

Notably, Gangai Amaran has not issued any public statement regarding the viral video or the subsequent criticism yet. Meanwhile, the incident remains widely discussed across social media platforms.
