As 2026 opens with anticipation running high across the South Indian film industry, Jana Nayagan stands tall as one of the year’s most awaited releases. Headlined by Thalapathy Vijay in what marks his final film appearance, the film carries both cinematic weight and emotional significance. For actor Jason Shah, being part of this landmark film is nothing short of an honour, one shaped by timing, persistence, and a belief that the right roles arrive when they’re meant to.
Shah’s journey into Jana Nayagan wasn’t a straightforward one. He was first approached for the project in 2024, but prior commitments to a Telugu film forced him to decline, an opportunity he admits was difficult to let go of. Fate, however, had other plans. At the beginning of this year, the call came again, this time with a different role on offer. Shah accepted immediately.
Jason Shah on being on Thalapathy Vijay sets
While he remains tight-lipped about specifics, Shah reveals that his character presents him in an entirely new avatar, something distinctly different from anything he has done in his decade-long career in India. “It’s completely action-oriented,” he shares, underlining the physical and intense nature of the role. Being part of Jana Nayagan, he adds, is especially meaningful given Vijay’s unparalleled stardom. “There are very few people in the industry who command the kind of legacy and respect Vijay sir does.”
Although Shah didn’t get the opportunity to share screen space with Vijay, the actor insists that simply being on the set was an experience in itself. "He carries a very distinct aura. The way the crew spoke about him, the energy around his scenes, and the respect he commands on set were palpable. Vijay sir has a personality and mindset that are truly his own. There’s a quiet authority and discipline to the way his presence shapes the environment. I was really looking forward to even interacting with him, and hopefully, that opportunity comes in the future," he shares.
Jason Shah on collaborating with Bobby Deol
Jana Nayagan also marks Shah’s first collaboration with Bobby Deol, whose recent performances have drawn attention for their intensity and depth. Shah reflects on this experience with admiration, drawing parallels with legendary villains of Indian cinema. According to him, actors who portray darkness most convincingly often possess remarkable gentleness off-screen. Bobby Deol, he says, embodied that belief fully.
"Despite everything that was happening in his personal life, he never let it affect his professionalism. Even when he had just a couple of hours or days of shoot left, he showed up fully present, focused, committed, and dignified. There was no bitterness, no drama, no withdrawal. don’t even think “professional” is the right word, it was more than that. It reflected the kind of artist and human being he truly is. That steadiness in difficult moments isn’t taught in acting schools; it comes from character," Shah said.
Bollywood vs South
Having worked extensively across both Bollywood and the South Indian film industries, Shah avoids comparisons but acknowledges the sheer scale at which Southern cinema operates. In films like Jana Nayagan, that scale becomes even more crucial, especially for antagonistic roles. “The stronger the villain, the more space the hero has to rise,” he explains, adding that he’s glad to see Bollywood increasingly embracing villain-centric narratives as well.
With its action-driven storytelling, powerful performances, and the emotional gravity of being Vijay’s farewell film, Jana Nayagan promises to be more than just a cinematic event, it’s a moment of transition, legacy, and celebration. And for Jason Shah, being part of that moment is both a professional milestone and a deeply personal triumph.
