The year 2025 has been a magical one for Malayalam superstar Mohanlal. With two major blockbusters (L2: Empuraan and Thudarum) and the honour of receiving the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the actor has been on an incredible professional high. While he has already had three theatrical releases this year, one of his most celebrated mass entertainers, Ravanaprabhu, has now been re-released. The 2001 film has returned to theatres across Kerala to an overwhelming response.

Ravanaprabhu re-release

Fans have turned cinema halls into festive grounds with dancing and cheering. The film has primarily been re-released across Kerala, with a limited re-release in Bengaluru, home to a large Malayalee population.

The movie saw one of the biggest pre-sales in Kerala for a re-release. The hype and enthusiasm for the film's re-release is through the roof. Videos of fans celebrating the re-release in theatres is now going viral on social media.

Take a look:

Ravanaprabhu plot

The film features Mohanlal in a dual role as Mangalassery Neelakandan and M. N. Karthikeyan. A sequel to I. V. Sasi’s Devaasuram (1993), the 2001 release saw many actors reprise their roles. Napoleon returns as Neelakandan’s arch-enemy Mundackal Shekharan, alongside Vasundhara Das, Siddique, Innocent, Vijayaraghavan, and Sai Kumar. Revathi also makes a cameo appearance as Bhanumathi.

The story revolves around Karthikeyan, a successful businessman whose father Neelakandan faces financial troubles. Karthikeyan attempts to reclaim their ancestral home, Mangalassery Tharavadu, from Shekharan, and in the process, he abducts Shekharan’s daughter — only to fall in love with her.

Originally released on August 31, 2001, Ravanaprabhu received highly positive reviews and was a major commercial success, grossing over Rs 15 crores during its theatrical run. It went on to become the highest-grossing Malayalam film of 2001.

Mohanlal's work front

So far, Mohanlal had three new releases in the theatres this year. He started the year with the much-anticipated film L2: Empuraan, which emerged as a blockbuster. He was then seen in Thudarum, a family drama which broke box office records. For Onam, the superstar starred in Sathyan Anthikad's Hridayapoorvam. The film did average at the box office. Now, the actor is gearing up for the bilingual film Vrusshabha. The period drama will be released in theatres on November 6.
