Upasana Kamineni Konidela's discourse on financial freedom at IIT Hyderabad extended far beyond the auditorium. Upasana, who is married to actor Ram Charan, spoke to students on early financial planning, taking control of life decisions, and how financial freedom empowered her to act on her own terms.

However, one statement in particular sparked a huge reaction on the internet, and her message quickly became the focus of a national discourse.

Upasana's advice to young women

Upasana took to her X handle to share a video where she mentioned, "The biggest insurance for women is to save your eggs. Because then, you can choose when to get married, when you want to have kids on your own terms, when you are financially independent."

"Today, I stand on my own feet. I earn a living for myself. I am proudly financially independent. This security made me strong and confident to make bold decisions in my life. Do things that work the best for you. Before you reach your 30s, have your goals ready, have your path set and know how much you’re going to earn at every different point in your life. Earn wealth-wise, health-wise and relationship-wise. If you’re clear about your vision, goal and role in life, you become unstoppable," she added.

All about freezing eggs and conception

Early natural conception increases one's chances of fertility. Women under 30 have a 20-25 percent probability of conceiving each cycle. Fertility gradually drops after age 30, with a noticeable drop around 35 and a significant drop in the early 40s.

Egg freezing can improve the prospects for women who postpone motherhood, especially if eggs are frozen before the age of 35, when live birth success rates from thawed eggs range between 50 and 60%. Freezing 15-20 eggs before 35 can increase the odds to 70-80%. After 35, success rates drop to 30-40% and go below 20% after 40. The quantity of eggs frozen is an important determinant of success.

Social egg freezing in India usually costs between Rs 1.2 lakh and Rs 2 lakh every cycle, which covers consultations, medicine, and egg retrieval. Annual storage fees range between Rs 5,000 and Rs 30,000, depending on the clinic. Insurance coverage is restricted and typically does not cover the expenditures, as it is frequently viewed as optional. Some international corporations provide coverage, although typically with limits and exclusions.
