Vijay faces a turbulent start to 2026 as Jana Nayagan remains stalled due to CBFC issues while he is questioned in the Karur stampede case. The actor has sought to defer further CBI questioning until after Pongal
Thalapathy Vijay
The year 2026 has not started on the best note for actor and politician Vijay. The actor’s final film, Jana Nayagan, missed its release date due to issues with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Meanwhile, Vijay is also under investigation in connection with the Karur stampede, which claimed several lives. While he was questioned by the CBI on Monday, Vijay has sought a deferment of further questioning to next week due to prior commitments, including efforts to secure the screening of his film Jana Nayagan and in view of the harvest festival Pongal.
Vijay requests to defer questioning
TVK general secretary C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar addressed the press after returning from Delhi, where he was questioned by the CBI in connection with the Karur stampede. “He (Vijay) appeared before the CBI as a witness in the Karur stampede case on January 12. He requested that the enquiry be held after Pongal, considering the festival and his film release. He will be informed about the next date for the enquiry,” Nirmal Kumar told reporters.
“As we have been saying, there are several lapses in the case. While Chief Minister M.K. Stalin claimed that 607 policemen were present on duty during the Karur incident, Additional DGP (Law and Order) Davidson Devasirvatham said there were only 500 policemen. When there is such a discrepancy, imagine the real situation,” Kumar added.
CBI summons for Vijay and SC hearing for Jana Nayagan
The CBI has summoned TVK chief and actor Vijay for a second round of questioning on January 19 in connection with the Karur stampede case, officials said on Tuesday. Vijay, who was questioned for over six hours at the CBI headquarters on Monday, was asked to appear again on Tuesday but sought another date citing Pongal. The CBI also questioned former Tamil Nadu ADG (Law and Order) S. Davidson Devasirvatham on Monday and has so far questioned several TVK office bearers, Vijay’s driver, and multiple police officers.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has scheduled the hearing of the Jana Nayagan vs CBFC matter on January 15 at 11:30 am. KVN Productions, which is backing Jana Nayagan, approached the Supreme Court after a division bench of the Madras High Court stayed an earlier order granting censor certification to the film.
