Lights, camera, goodbye

I am sure everyone will remember his bright smile,” reminisces Vaquar Shaikh about actor Rituraj Singh, 59, who passed away early Tuesday morning after a heart attack. The two began their association from 1993 with the show, Banegi Apni Baat. “He was much senior to me when I joined Banegi Apni Baat. He was already a star, and we were besotted by him and his performance. Here was a guy, who had just entered the industry, yet he was already doing game shows, movies, and TV shows. We all looked up to him,” says Shaikh, adding that it was not just his performance, but the way Singh conducted himself among his peers and juniors that won hearts. “He never let me feel like a newbie on set. I remember having friendly banter and rehearsing lines on set with him. Ritz was always up for [rehearsals], and often gave us tips on how to perform. He was an extremely knowledgeable guy. Ask him about cinema, politics, the camera, acting, method acting, or anything happening in the world, he was well-updated. He had the gift of the gab, was spontaneous, and full of energy.” Vaquar Shaikh However, what Shaikh admired the most about his close friend was that despite more than three deacdes in the industry, Singh continued to challenge himself and take on diverse roles, earning appreciation for his ability to stay relevant in an evolving industry.  “When he crossed his 50s, the kind of work he kept doing, especially in the last five-six years, is mind-blowing. He managed to adapt and stay relevant. He transformed himself to fit different age categories. It’s difficult for senior actors to get noticed. So many actors fade away with time, but he was always doing something or the other. It is so unreal to talk about him in the past tense,” mourns Shaikh, who played his younger brother in Rupali Ganguly-starrer Anupamaa. Singh’s illustrious career included interesting roles, like popular TV shows Tehkikaat, Kutumb, Jyoti, Beintehaa, and most recently, Anupamaa. He was also seen in film and web series, including Made in Heaven, Indian Police Force, and Yaariyan 2.

Vaquar Shaikh recalls shooting with Rituraj Singh: He was a 'huge star'

Vaquar Shaikh, who has worked with the late actor Rituraj Singh in the 1993 show 'Banegi Apni Baat' (BAB) reminisced about the beautiful memories from the sets of the show, calling him a 'huge star'. Vaquar, who is currently playing Rituraj's on-screen brother in the show 'Anupamaa' said that he was shaken by the news of his demise. Rituraj passed away at the age of 59 in the wee hours of Tuesday, due to cardiac arrest. Expressing grief over the demise of the senior actor, the 'Chandrakanta' fame said: "I don't know what to say. I'm actually quite speechless to speak about him. It's quite shocking. I'm actually saddened, I'm nervous, and I'm at a loss for words." He further revealed that the late actor was called Ritz by his friends, and talked about working with him in BAB. "He (Rituraj) was, of course, doing the show right from the beginning. I joined after three years. I have beautiful memories because I remember going on the set and meeting this actor who was a huge star then because of his telefilms that had already been released, and we used to really look up to him. And, when BAB started, everyone in the show used to be a huge star," he said. 'Banegi Apni Baat' starred actors like -- Irrfan Khan, Shefali Shah, Firdaus Dadi, Anita Kanwal, Varun Badola, Rakhee Tandon, and R Madhavan. Vaquar further said: "He was very courteous, sweet, generous, and very nice to people like me, who had just joined the show. He was very helpful and instantly would make you feel at ease. Now that I'm talking about him, I so distinctly remember his smile, which used to brighten up and be full of energy and vigour and forever helpful and very knowledgeable. He knew about everything under the sun at that point in time." He also regrets not being able to shoot even a single scene with Rituraj, even though he was playing his younger brother in 'Anupamaa'. "It’s quite ironic that I entered 'Anupamaa' playing his younger brother, but I didn't shoot with him, not even for a single day, which is very strange," he said. The 'Saaya' actor added: "I wish I had at least one scene with him because that would have been really nice. I would have worked with him after nearly more than two decades. But I should have had at least one scene with him." This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. Anushka Sen with Mahendra Singh Dhoni

What is the connection between actress Anushka Sen and ‘Chachu’ MS Dhoni?

Actress Anushka Sen and former cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni are two acclaimed names from India who have enjoyed global acclaim. While one belongs to showbiz and another to the field of sports, both stars enjoy a massive fan following among the masses. Anushka, at only 21 years of age, has been appointed as the Honorary Ambassador of Korea, expanding her global reach, while Dhoni is among the greatest of all times when it comes to cricket.  But what is the common connection between the two? Well, we wonder, but here’s what the actress recently revealed! In a recent interview, the actress recalled her first meeting with Mahendra Singh Dhoni and said, “I went and met with him and he was like, 'So where are you from? I’m from Ranchi. You are also from Ranchi, right?' And that created like the first bond and we were like ‘Yeah! Go Ranchi! Go Ranchi! Go Jharkhand!” Sen, who shot around 13-14 advertisements in a span of 7 years with Dhoni, also added, "Honestly it still feels like a dream. It felt like a hallucination because Dhoni was the opposite of what people thought a celebrity would be. He was so sweet not only to me. The best part about him is that he treats everybody with respect, with equal respect. Doesn’t matter if you are somebody working behind the camera or if you are an actor.”  She described that the cricketer was polite towards everyone on the set. Additionally, she said, “He has taken pictures with my parents and you know he has spoken to them that, Oh your daughter is so lovely!” She describes how he used to wait after the pack-up to let everyone click photos with him. Her bond with MS Dhoni was so intense that she started calling him, ‘Chachu.’ The actress also mentioned that her father still keeps on referring to Mahendra Singh Dhoni when it comes to inculcating calm and down-to-earth behavior. On the work front, while her Korean project 'Asia' is eagerly anticipated by the fans and the audiences, the actress is also shooting for something exciting. Seems like she has some of the biggest surprises lined up for this year and we are excited to know more about it. Sen was also recently invited by the United Nations to the prestigious COP28 in the UAE, the only Indian to have performed on the stage for a global cause.

Karan Wahi

Karan Wahi: TV wants better shows, web wants more episodes

With age and experience comes maturity. Gone is the Karan Wahi, who enjoyed playing the boy-next-door and favoured the rom-com genre. With SonyLIV’s Raisinghani vs Raisinghani, the actor has chosen to play a flawed, ruthless lawyer opposite Jennifer Winget. In conversation with mid-day, Wahi opens up about the new medium of TV-plus, what he loved about his character, and his evolving equation with his Dill Mill Gayye co-star Winget. Edited excerpts from the interview.  Did the fact that the show is TV-plus, a hybrid of TV and OTT, convince you to take it up?Not really. It does come across as a television show because it drops every day. But script-wise or in terms of the way we’ve shot it, there is nothing television about it. It has a web series’ treatment. It is a new approach that the platform is trying; they feel there is an instant need for something like this that caters to both the TV and OTT audience. The television audience keeps asking for better shows, while the web audience keeps asking for more episodes. How many episodes does Raisinghani vs Raisinghani have? There is a cap on the number of episodes, but the platform is not keen on revealing the exact number of episodes. We’ve been shooting for the past four months. Wahi and Jennifer Winget in Raisinghani vs Raisinghani Considering it’s a TV-plus offering, is self-censorship practised? In web shows, especially in terms of abusive content, I feel we tend to go overboard. We have become complacent, assuming that everyone talks like that nowadays. But [in real life], most people don’t use expletives in their conversations. My last show [Channa Mereya] didn’t have abusive language. Raisinghani vs Raisinghani is realistic and they are keeping a check on it in order to cater to both audiences. What kind of cases will be tackled in the series? Some cases have been taken from real lives, but, at the end of the day, we cannot name them. The primary aspect in most legal dramas is that we see cases fought in the court. However, in real life, so many cases are not really fought in the court; instead, they are worked upon in law firms. That is where we’ve showcased the interpersonal dynamics. Cases are a good way to take the narrative forward. Does the question of ethics come into play while tackling cases? We’ve shown that there are two kinds of lawyers—one who will do anything to win. Virat has come with the single goal of victory. On the other hand, there is Anushka [Winget’s character] who believes that you don’t have to be ruthless to win. While Virat considers the absence of ruthlessness as a weakness, Anushka considers that as her strength. The show is beautifully written. There are flashbacks from when my character was in his 20s, and they show why he became the way he did. Do you identify with Virat? When I had first read the script, I felt I was nothing like Virat. But after playing him for the last four months, I feel I have often done things that he would do. I feel every man has a Virat in him; some men may not be as egoistic as he is. For instance, a man talks to three women at a time, but if his girlfriend does that, he gets livid. That is the mentality of so many people. What I loved about Virat is that he is real and flawed. You will hate him for what he does, but you will sympathise with him. How has your chemistry with Jennifer evolved after 14 years? We’ve known each other for more than 14 years. The last time I worked with Jennifer was on Dill Mill Gayye; it was only my third TV show and I was all of 24 years. [This time] our friendship and experience reflected on camera. It is easier when you work with friends. For the world Jen and I could be stars, but we’ve seen our journeys closely and it doesn’t change anything for the two of us.

Meera Deosthale

A blend of relatability and drama

While some claim that television is becoming regressive, Meera Deosthale firmly believes that the medium is improving with time. “Everyone is trying to bring more realistic content to the fore, and actors are not afraid to play [aged] on screen. Of course, there is drama, twists and turns, and all of that. That’s what keeps the audience glued,” says the actor, who is back on television after a year’s gap with Kuch Reet Jagat Ki Aisi Hai. Chosen among 300-plus candidates, Deosthale says that it was in JD Majethia’s office that she learned of the story and her character, and fell in love with it. “When the story was narrated to me, I couldn’t stop crying. In fact, the person giving the narration also teared up. The show is adapted from a Gujarati book and something JD sir has been wanting to make for a long time. I was waiting for something substantial for a long time, and the show came at the right time. In the interim, I was auditioning for roles and trying to lose the 20 kilos I put on for my previous show,” she shares, adding that she took up the show because she could relate to the concept and that it was not “too preachy”. “No matter how blessed you are, dowry is something that happens in every strata of society. But the beauty of the show is that it also tackles domestic abuse, extramarital affairs, and patriarchy in a relatable way. It is also a love story, and about the contrasting values of two families.” Deosthale has been paired opposite Zaan Khan. Going by their workshops and shooting so far, she shares that Majethia has liked their on-screen chemistry. “He is a nice co-actor to have and vibe with. He brings a lot of positivity on the set,” adds the actor.

Bhagya Lakshmi

Telly tattle

Bhagya Lakshmi took a seven-year leap where Lakshmi (Aishwarya Khare) is seen living in a village with her daughter, and Rishi (Rohit Suchanti) lives in Mumbai with his son. Suchanti is ecstatic to play the role of a father for the first time on screen. “As an actor, I love how my profession allows me to play multiple roles, it helps me understand every emotion and character in its own unique way. The upcoming storyline shows a deep bond between a father and son. I am enjoying this upgrade of my character who is more mature and responsible because of his son. Playing a father is not easy, especially when you aren’t one in real life. To get into this version of my role, I had to change my body language, attire, and mainly see things from a totally new perspective,” said the actor.
