Season 1
Stranger Things season 1 revolves around the disappearance of 12-year-old Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) in Hawkins, Indiana, in 1983. As his friends, Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), and Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin), investigate, they find a mysterious girl with psychokinetic abilities named Eleven (Milli Bobby Brown).
Meanwhile, Will's mother, Joyce (Winona Ryder), and Police Chief Hopper (David Harbour) try to search for him. During their investigation, they uncover a secret government lab and a dangerous creature from another dimension called the Demogorgon.
The first season ended in a confrontation with the monster, wherein Eleven uses her powers to help defeat it.
Season 2
The influence of Upside Down continues to threaten Hawkins as Will Byers still gets by visions of a massive shadow monster, known as the Mind Flayer, which eventually possesses him.
The group investigates a new threat while discovering tunnels under the town and a swarm of "Demodogs". Meanwhile, Eleven searches for others like her and finds a girl named Kali, while Hopper and Joyce try to fight the Mind Flayer, ultimately sacrificing Bob Newby (Sean Astin) to save the others.
The season ends with the Mind Flayer still looming, despite the team closing the gate to the Upside Down.
Season 3
The gang must restrict the Mind Flayer from possessing residents and discover a secret Russian base under the new Starcourt Mall, built to reopen the Upside Down gate.
In the climactic battle, Billy Hargrove (Dacre Montgomery) is killed while protecting the group from the physical Mind Flayer monster. Meanwhile, Chief Jim Hopper is presumed dead when Joyce Byers closes the gate in the Russian lab.
The third season concludes with the Byers family, along with a now powerless Eleven, moving away from Hawkins, Indiana, as a new threat lingers with the Russians holding an American prisoner.
Season 4
Season 4 forced the group to battle a new villain, Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower), on multiple fronts, namely, in Hawkins, a Russian prison, and a California lab.
Vecna's true identity is revealed as Henry Creel/One, Dr. Brenner's first test subject, who preyed on the teens' trauma to open portals.
The season ended with Eddie Munson's tragic death, Max in a coma, and the Upside Down beginning a full-scale invasion of Hawkins.
