It is amazing how dogs understand humans without us having to say a single word. That's what the play Wagabond is all about. Developed by Gillo's Studio Project for repertory artists, it was first staged at the Bhau Daji Lad Museum in April 2014.
"This charming little story is about a dog called Bozo and his human family. It is inspired by my pet who I used to call Shah Rukh Khan for the way he moved his eyebrows whenever we spoke. For a child and an animal, it isn't about the taxonomy but it's the sheer bond that exists," says the director Prasad Dagare. While the play is open for adults, the workshop thereafter is strictly for ages 6-9.
"It explores the ideas in the play including non-verbal communication using gestures, intonation and body language and will be facilitated by the actors and the director who have devised the play," informs Shaili Sathyu, Artistic Director of Gillo Repertory adding further, "In our experience, older or younger children are unable to connect with the play. That's why, when plays are created with pedagogical inputs, they are kept age specific." While there is no real pooch on stage, the dog's thoughts are in English and all the humans speak gibberish in the play. "This is used as the device to differentiate between them," smiles Dagare.
