Every year, Indians across the country and the world look forward to Diwali, popularly known as the ‘Festival of Lights’. This year is going to be no different, and with the festival around the corner, the excitement is palpable, but as always people are going to be confused about the exact date of Diwali.

Known to be a five-day festival that starts with Dhanteras, this year it will begin on October 18 and conclude on October 23 with Bhai Dooj. So, when is the main day of Diwali? Many people are confused between October 20 and 21, but here’s what you need to know to clear your doubt.

These are the five days of Diwali: Dhanteras, Choti Diwali or Narak Chaturdashi, Diwali and Lakshmi Puja, Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj.

While many people often confuse it with other days, the main day of Diwali is the third day on October 20, as it marks the return of Lord Rama, his wife Sita, and Lakshman from their 14 years of exile. It is also known to mark the win of good over evil.

Diwali, which is also called as Deepavali, is known as the ‘Festival of Lights’ because of the presence of diya, that people light every year for the festival.

The celebrations also include the coming together of family and friends, who visit each other in their homes or outside to eat, drink and celebrate the festival. The festival is marked by different traditions in cultures across India along with the traditional snacks of the region.

In Maharashtra, the food usually includes sweet and savoury delights like chaklis, laddoos and more.

The festival is also marked by the lighting of crackers and sparklers, which has seen a change over the years, due to the growing awareness about the amount of pollution that is causes during that time. While air pollution harms those with respiratory issues, the noise pollution also makes life difficult for those with hearing problems, and even animals like dogs and cats in the neighbourhood.

While Diwali is a time of celebration, it is also important to be mindful that nobody is hurt through the various activities
