As the anticipation for Kantara: Chapter 1 builds, the conversation around the film isn’t just about box office numbers or visual spectacle.

For many, it’s about identity, pride, and recognition. From filmmakers in Mumbai to communities along the Konkan coast and even diaspora audiences in Chicago, Kantara has sparked a sense of cultural belonging that few films manage to achieve.

Here is what their expectations are from the prequel

Harry Fernandes, 63, filmmaker, Mumbai:

Kantara worked mainly because of word of mouth. It tells the story of a common man protecting his culture and land, something everyone relates to. The film’s authenticity and emotional core struck a chord with audiences. From what I’ve seen, the technical side of the sequel looks even better. I just hope the story feels larger than life, building on what made the first so memorable.

Shubham Pawar, 22, stringer reporter, Mumbai:

As someone from Konkan, I felt an immediate connection to Kantara. Its portrayal of Bhuta Kola reminded me of our Dashavatar traditions, from the elaborate costumes to the belief that performers channel divine energy. These are not just performances but rituals where the community unites — and that authenticity made the film powerful.

Roshan Amin, 34, consulting senior manager, Chicago (US):

Kantara created a surreal atmosphere. Here in the US, many Kannadigas and Tuluvas proudly introduced it to friends of different backgrounds, some even watching it multiple times. Beyond being a good vs. evil story, it evoked pride in our culture and showed that Indian mythology goes beyond the Ramayana or Mahabharata. My hope for the sequel is that it continues celebrating our land and mythology, without just chasing spectacle, and explores the origin of these rituals while blending action, drama, comedy, romance and music.
