Raksha Bandhan, one of the most auspicious Hindu festivals that celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters, is around the corner, and people across India are preparing for the festivities. According to the Hindu lunar calendar, the occasion is observed on the full moon day (Purnima) of the Shravan month, which typically falls in August according to the Gregorian calendar.

Raksha Bandhan 2025: Date and Shubh Muhurat

In 2025, Raksha Bandhan will be celebrated on Saturday, August 9.

According to Drik Panchang, the Raksha Bandhan thread ceremony time will last for 7 hours and 37 minutes, from 5:47 am to 1:24 pm. The Purnima Tithi will begin on August 8 at 2:12 pm and end on August 9 at 1:24 pm.

Drik Panchang states that the most auspicious time for tying rakhi is during the Aparahna period, which is late afternoon. It also advises avoiding Raksha Bandhan rituals during the Bhadra period.

Raksha Bandhan 2025: Significance and Celebrations

Raksha Bandhan, which literally means ‘the bond of protection’, is a festival that honours the strength of the relationship siblings share. Traditionally, the sister ties a rakhi on her brother’s wrist, and in return, he vows to support and protect her. The rakhi symbolises the love, care, respect, and protective spirit that defines this special bond.

The festival is an opportunity for siblings to strengthen their bond and for families to come together and celebrate the occasion.

Sisters typically prepare a thali (plate) containing rakhi, roli, rice, diya, and sweets. They perform an aarti (a ceremonial prayer) for their brother, apply tilak to his forehead, and tie the rakhi on his wrist. The brother gives a gift in return and promises to protect his sister(s).

Raksha Bandhan is celebrated with enthusiasm across India. In some regions, the day also coincides with other festivals, such as Narali Purnima in Maharashtra.
