Basket Case
Long before Green Day released any of its many hits, the American rock band, which was formed in 1987, released Basket Case, which was a part of their 1994 album 'Dookie'. It was the second single from the band released on August 1 and went on to receive a Grammy nomination. For many who know their songs later, this was the initial days of the birth of the three member-band's unique sound.
Boulevard of Broken Dreams
Almost 10 years later, the band released 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams '. It was the second single from their seventh studio album 'American Idiot'. Written by Billie Joe Armstrong, the song was composed by the band and came after the first song, which had the same name as the album. It also peaked at No 2 on Billboard Hot 100, making it their most famous song in the US. It also went on to win the Grammy Award for Record of the Year.
Wake Me Up When September Ends
'Boulevard of Broken Dreams' wasn't the only song that was a hit from Green Day's seventh album. 'Wake Me Up When September Ends' went on to become an anthem that is sung till today. Many Green Day fans will know that Armstrong wrote this song, and it was inspired from the death of his father, when he was 10 years old.
The song was released on June 13 in 2005 and has been popular during the last days of September, as many listeners and fans share it.

21 Guns
21 Guns is one of the many other hits of the band, who released it a as their second single from their eighth studio album '21st Century Breakdown' in 2009. Incidentally, the song also featured in the film 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen'. It was also nominated for a Grammy award for the Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal, and Best Rock Song. The theme also addresses the subject of patriotism, as it is about the 21 gun salute.
Good Riddance
Last but not the least, 'Good Riddance' or 'Time of Your Life' as it is more popularly and unofficially known, is one of the biggest hits that was released as their second single from the fifth studio album 'Nimrod'. It is one of their most popular songs that became a hit before their later music. As the story goes, Armstrong wrote the song in 1993 about his girlfriend Amanda, who left him to go to Ecuador.
