Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama attended a prayer ceremony on his 90th birth anniversary celebrations at the Dalai Lama Temple in McLeodganj. PIC/AFP
The birthday celebration was attended by thousands of people, including representatives of various Tibetan Buddhist sects, school children, dancers and singers from different countries, and Buddhists from across the world
The occasion was also marked with cultural performances from various groups. The celebrations started with a song for the Dalai Lama performed by Switzerland-based Tibetan singer Jamyan Choeden. It was followed by a dance performance by a group of Mongolian and Albanian artists
Political leaders from here and abroad also shared the canopied space, admiring the Dalai Lama and his continuing commitment to global peace and religious harmony. Union ministers Kiren Rijiju and Rajiv Ranjan Singh, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, Sikkim minister Sonam Lama, and Hollywood actor Richard Gere addressed the gathering after the performances
Members of Tibetan cultural groups also distributed cake on the occasion of the spiritual leader’s 90th birthday
Speaking at the ceremony, Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso said that it is the love of the people that motivates him to continue on the path of serving all sentient beings
