Kutiyattam
Kutiyattam, a 2,000-year-old Sanskrit theatre tradition from Kerala, was recognized by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity and became one of the first Indian elements to be inscribed on the Representative List in 2008. It blends Sanskrit classicism with local traditions and is known for its elaborate eye and hand expressions, along with long performances staged in temple theatres (Kuttampalams).

Yoga
Yoga was inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December 2016. UNESCO recognises yoga as a set of practices, expressions, knowledge, and skills essential to cultural heritage, encompassing meditation, breath control, and physical postures.

Kumbh Mela
The Kumbh Mela is recognised by UNESCO not as a physical World Heritage Site but as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, inscribed in 2017. It represents the world’s largest peaceful gathering of pilgrims and is held in rotation at Haridwar, Prayagraj (Allahabad), Nashik, and Ujjain. Its inscription highlights the traditions, rituals, collective faith, skills, and knowledge passed down through generations, promoting cultural diversity and human creativity.

Durga Puja
Durga Puja in Kolkata was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December 2021. UNESCO recognises it as a vibrant public celebration of religion and art, a hub for artistic expression, and a cultural tradition that fosters community and creativity. It is also the first Indian festival to receive this status.

Garba, the traditional folk dance from Gujarat, was added to UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on December 6, 2023, becoming India’s 15th cultural element on the list. It is recognised for its inclusivity, devotional significance, and celebration of womanhood, especially during Navratri.
