If you have a compact camera which doesn't permit you to change the angle of the flash, then you need to know when to turn it on

When should you use the flash of a camera? Normally, we will say, 'when it is dark', but this need not always be the case, especially if you have a taste for 'dark' photography.

Of course, for this, you need a really good camera. I realised this when using a 10MP camera two years ago to take some snaps of my cousin sister's wedding reception. This camera showed almost no image noise when pictures were taken in poor light without a flash.

Photographers who work for MiD DAY use expensive cameras, which cost upward of a lakh, and the photos that they click are crisp because of their talent in photography and the high quality of equipment they use. People like you and me are hampered because we just know how to point and click and our cameras are puny when compared to the professional equipment that real photographers use. The biggest advantage they have with respect to the flash is that they can use bounce flash, while we users of compact cameras are struck with the direct flash.

But this doesn't mean that we have to only choose to take pictures with a flash. Here are a few pictures I took to explore this topic. I am just an amateur and so I cannot claim that I can teach you anything but you can always explore an elephant even with a blind man and learn something, right?

This hookah, which has been converted into a reading lamp, shows some noise while used without a flash. Fortunately, one can get better effects with a flash because the metal has not been polished. Had this been the case, the straight flash would have produced an impact similar to the Jawa a lot of white, which blots out the picture.

Which is better? In some cases, it is hard to say if a flash helps or not. This picture of Lord Narasimha who has been liberally anointed with butter is a classic case because it combines black, white, and some colour too. Many people, when shown these two pictures, have said that they like the one without the flash because it is cool and pleasing to the eye; however, they also want to see the picture with the flash because they can see the details and then appreciate the picture without the flash!

Not so bad

This is an interesting subject shot in the rays of the almost-set sun. It has metal, wood, shell and plastic, so it is interesting to see how the flash impacts the image. While image noise is prominent, the shadow effect on Sherlock's face is worth it. However, with the flash, the wood on the pipe is well highlighted.
