There's no better way for car aficionados to appreciate a vehicle than in a Hollywood movie. As the camera caresses the car's curves and some character rattles off its engine capacity, there we are ufffd on the edge of our seats ufffd waiting for the driver to rev up and change gears as the camera cuts to a shot of the speedometer, showing an absolutely unreal speed.
It can happen only in a Hollywood flick. And Hollywood being Hollywood, the cars come loaded with super-cool gadgets: revolving number plates, speed boosters, pop-out gun barrels and even wings.
The guys in Los Angeles know how to feed our car fetish, making it tough to choose the best on-screen vehicles. Still, we tried, and here's our pick of the top three four-wheelers in Hollywood.
James Bond's Aston Martin DB5
Appears in: Goldfinger, Thunderball, GoldenEye
The Aston Martin DB5 sports car was transformed for the super spy by none other than the Q Branch, the fictional research and development division of the British Secret Service.
It features pop out gun barrels behind the front indicators, a bullet shield behind the rear window, and a three-way revolving front number plate showing GOLD FINGER, JB007 or BMT216A. Businessman and car collector Harry Yeaggy recently picked up the Goldfinger DB5 for a cool $4.1 million at an auction.
We just hope he does as much justice to the beauty as Sean Connery did.
Batman's Batmobile: The Tumbler
Appears in: Batman Begins and The Dark Knight
This is one mean machine that packs a punch, and how! The Tumbler is described as a cross between a Lamborghini and a Tank, which Bruce Wayne modifies from a prototype military vehicle. The vehicle does not have a front axle and looks a lot like a rugged, workhorse rather than a sleek navigator.
The best part of the vehicle is that when Batman ejects from the Batmobile, it turns into the Batpod (a motorcycle formed by the front wheels and struts of the Batmobile), while the rest of the vehicle self-destructs. Just right for a superhero out to save the world. Also, perfect for Mumbai's maddening traffic, we might add.
Dr Emmett 'Doc' Brown's DeLorean DMC-12
Appears in: The Back To The Future Trilogy
How about going time travelling in a plutonium (yes, you read that right) powered DeLorean DMC-12? We'd say it's a super idea, except for the fact that Dr Emmett 'Doc' Brown pretty much qualifies for the title of the mad scientist.
The Flux Capacitor and Mr Fusion Home Energy Reactor, turned the original Giorgetto Giugiaro body design with the stainless steel outer skin panels and gull-wing doors into a time travelling machine. Now wouldn't that look swanky sitting in your garage?
