Maximalist chic or minimalist glam — satin skirts can be whatever you want them to be, with the right finishing touches

Once relegated to ball gowns and sleepwear, satin has now entered its cool girl era in the form of midi and maxi-length skirts that can be dressed up or down, as the occasion demands. From workwear to casual brunches, to date nights, the skirt does it all, and it wouldn’t be a stretch to claim it as the latest but also most unassuming addition to the modern-day capsule wardrobe. “The reason why this skirt works is because it is easy to wear, suits a variety of body types, and instantly elevates your outfit by adding luxe movement. It also can be paired in unexpected ways to go from daytime chic to relaxed eveningwear,” says fashion designer Aanchal Bubber-Mehta.

Find your fit
A good quality, well-fitting satin skirt could find frequent rotation in your wardrobe, which makes it a piece worth investing in. Skirts that are cut on the bias offer a more comfortable flowing fit, while thicker-weight satin can be more forgiving. A hidden elastic waist looks sleeker than a visible band, and a fit that hugs your hips then flares loosely around your leg line will look the most elegant. Knee or calf-length styles work for most body shapes and more slinky materials may need shapewear to smooth out any bumps.

Although generally durable, and easy to maintain, certain types of satin — such as mercerised cotton satin — can be more resistant to fading and better suited to home washes. It also helps to pick skirts in classic neutrals, such as taupe, black, cream, white or old rose, as these tend to pair well with a variety of tops, Mehta says. If social media hacks are to be believed, a light mist of hairspray or a slip can prevent static cling that is often associated with satin, especially in drier weather. Many influencers also recommend going up a style, for a more relaxed, more flattering fit.
Your style mantra

“One of the simplest ways to wear a satin skirt is with a matte tank top and a textured bomber jacket — the vibe you’re going for is effortless edge with a touch of luxe,” Mehta advises, noting that this fit is perfect from breezy monsoon days. “When styling the skirt, let it be the star of the show. Keep the top in the same colour family, especially with jewel tones. If you’re wearing a white satin skirt, try self-white or a soft pastel top for a clean, elevated finish,” she adds. For a more low-key outfit, style the skirt with a printed knit top to balance the look. If your top is loud, keep the skirt subtle. Another style that’s popular with fashion bloggers is to wear a satin skirt with a printed, cropped tee (the base colours should be similar) and sneakers. These fits can easily take you from day to night, with a few minor adjustments.

Depending on your preferred aesthetic, you could also try a lace camisole for a more feminine, fresh, and easy look, or a straight-cut spaghetti strap top that’s slightly oversized to show a little skin without going overboard. For an unexpected twist, pair a matte shirt in a subtle print such as marble or abstract brushstroke, tucked into your skirt, Mehta suggests. Finally, tone down your accessories to keep them from competing with your skirt — a neutral satchel or a classic mommy bag, says Mehta pointing out that leather and satin make an unexpectedly appealing combination. In terms of jewellery, opt for delicate studs, a simple pendant necklace or solitaires. Loose hair, a high ponytail or a sleek bun can tie your look together, without forgoing the easy vibe.
