Pune: An NCP leader and member of Pune Municipal Corporation&rsquo;s Shikshan Mandal, was duped by two Hyderabad based-youths to the tune of Rs 84.57 lakh on the pretext of starting a business on partnership, in Dubai.

The incident came to light when National Congress Party (NCP) leader Laxmikant Mohanlal Khabiya (48), a resident of Laxminagar in Parvati lodged a complaint with Vishrambaug police station. Khabiya alleged that Mani Shankar and Hameed Saberi &mdash; both residents of Hyderabad &mdash; have duped him. A case has been registered under Sections 420 (cheating), 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 34 (an act done with common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.
Speaking to mid-day Khabiya said, "I had met the duo through mutual friends in 2015 in a business meet. Later the duo brought me a business proposal and it sounded interesting.&nbsp; I accepted it but did not realise that they will dupe me of Rs 84.57 lakh."
API Ravindra Patil who is investigating the case, said, "As per Khabiya&rsquo;s complaint, it was a business deal in which he had to invest R5 crore and after paying it, he would be getting five per cent shares in the business. The amount consisted of establishing the company, legal fees and other expenses.
Accordingly, Khabiya had paid R84.57 lakh via Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) in December 2015. Later Khabiya was promised that the business will begin from the New Year. When Khabiya followed up with the duo they began saying there will be a delay and then began avoiding his calls, and blocked them. Khabiya smelt a rat and approached us on Sunday and accordingly the case was filed. We trying to traced the duo as they are on the run."
