Pune Crime: 'Buyers' for flat try to rob woman, shoot her children

Beware before posting free ads on online trading sites. It may be an open invitation to robbers, as one woman found out. Two unidentified youngsters, on the pretext of buying a flat, entered a house in Talegaon Dabhade and tried robbing the woman owner on Wednesday. When she shouted and her children came running inside, the duo fired in the direction of her children as well. They fled the scene when the family further raised an alarm. A case was registered with the Talegaon Dabhade police.

The incident occurred with Dr Vaishali Dhumal (37), who stays on the ground floor of Shiv-Sneha Smruti apartment in Yashwantnagar with her husband Ajit and their two children – aged 11 and six. Vaishali works in Sevasadan Hospital. According to Dr Ajit, “We have plans to sell our flat and had uploaded the information on an online trading portal. After we uploaded the advertisement, on Monday we received a call from a youth of around 25 years of age. He claimed he was interested in purchasing our house. On Wednesday around 3.30 pm, he came to our house along with another friend, wanting to check the size of bedroom.”

According to Ajit’s statement to the police, Vaishali was alone at that time; her children were playing outside. When she took them into the bedroom, they threatened her with a knife and asked her to hand over jewellery and other valuables. When the woman shouted, her children came running inside. Seeing the children, one of the duo fired two rounds in the direction of the children. “My children escaped the attack but the two bullets pierced the wall. When my wife raised an alarm, the duo ran away,” Ajit told the police.

Police Inspector Vasant Babar, in-charge of Talegaon Dabhade police station, said, “We have registered a case against the accused under sections 323 (assault), 392 (robbery) and 34 (common intention), besides relevant sections of the Arms Act. Based on complainant’s description, we will be making sketches of the suspects and will soon arrest them.”
