A currency exchange businessman from Bhayander was allegedly robbed of Rs 4.5 lakh in broad daylight at Borivli station on Thursday. The incident took place inside a halted local train at platform 1, when a group of men, under the pretext of exchanging notes, attacked him and fled with the cash.
According to the Government Railway Police, the complainant, identified as Ganesh Subhash Chandra Sisodia, runs a business of exchanging old and torn currency notes through the Reserve Bank. Sisodia had gone to the station to meet a prospective customer, Omkar Manchekar, who claimed he wanted to exchange old Rs 2000 notes worth Rs 7 lakh.
Sisodia arrived at the station around 3 pm carrying Rs 6 lakh in cash, accompanied by his agent Manoj, who had introduced him to the client. Manchekar and three accomplices then attacked Sisodia.
“The gang bit his shoulder, assaulted him, and attempted to snatch his bag of cash. During the scuffle inside a halted local train, the bag tore open, spilling money. While Sisodia managed to save around Rs 1.5 lakh, the accused fled with Rs 4.5 lakh,” a police officer said. “A probe is underway to trace and arrest the accused persons,” confirmed Senior Inspector Datta Kopekar of Borivli GRP.
