The Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) has warned its customers to stay alert against fraudulent messages, scam links and malicious APK downloads claiming to be related to gas bill payments or supply disconnection.
In a public advisory issued in Mumbai, the company said that several cases have recently been reported in which fraudsters are impersonating MGL officials through SMS and WhatsApp.
According to the company, customers are receiving fake gas bill updates and urgent disconnection messages. These messages often pressure consumers to click on suspicious links, download APK files or share sensitive personal and financial information.
MGL said such tactics are designed to trick customers into revealing confidential details or installing malware on their mobile devices, leading to cyber theft and financial loss.
Company clarifies its official policy
MGL clearly stated that its representatives never ask for bank details, card numbers, passwords or one-time passwords (OTPs) through phone calls, text messages or WhatsApp.
The company also stated that it does not ask customers to download APK files or click on unknown links under any circumstances.
Customers have been advised to verify any doubtful message or call by contacting MGL directly through its official channels.
It said that for assistance, customers may call:
- (022) 68674500 and (022) 61564500
MGL has also asked customers to interact only through its official WhatsApp number: +91 9899203843, which carries a verified blue tick account.
Advice to victims of cyber fraud
The company said it has been regularly educating customers through different communication platforms about staying safe from digital fraud. However, despite repeated awareness campaigns, some consumers are still falling victim to such scams.
In case of any financial fraud or suspicious activity, customers are advised to immediately report the matter to the nearest police station or cybercrime cell for further action.
MGL urged customers to remain cautious and avoid responding to any suspicious communication related to gas bill payments or service disconnection.
