In a swift action, the Mumbai Police Crime Branch’s Unit 6, in coordination with Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) health officials, raided two illegal clinics in the Shivajinagar area of Govandi and arrested two men for practising medicine without proper qualifications.

The accused, identified as Rajiv Kapildev Rajan (34) and Kuberanath Gomti Yadav (56), were allegedly examining patients and administering treatments, including injections and antibiotics, while charging hefty consultation fees. Neither of them possessed a valid medical degree, licence, or registration with the Maharashtra Medical Council.

During the raid, the police seized a significant quantity of medicines, injections, syringes, and other medical equipment from the clinics. Two separate first information reports (FIRs) have been registered at Shivajinagar Police Station under relevant sections of the Maharashtra Medical Practitioners Act, 1961.

In a press note, the police said the operation was based on credible intelligence and carried out under the supervision of senior officers, including Mumbai Police Commissioner Deven Bharti, Additional Commissioner (Crime) Shailesh Balkawade, and Deputy Commissioner (Zone 1) Vishal Thakur. The raid was led by Unit 6 in-charge, Inspector Bharat Ghone.

Maharashtra to form committee against bogus doctors, illegal nursing homes in state

In March, the Maharashtra government announced plans to form a committee to monitor bogus doctors and unauthorised nursing homes in the state.

The panel will identify individuals practising medicine without proper qualifications and clinics operating without the required permissions.

The government has also stated it plans to amend the existing law to increase penalties for such violations, including stricter fines and longer jail terms for fake doctors and illegally operating hospitals.

Members of the state Legislative Council raised concerns about the lack of checks on bogus doctors and nursing homes in Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra. They demanded stern action and strict punishment for erring doctors and hospitals.

Replying on behalf of Eknath Shinde, who holds the urban development portfolio, Minister Uday Samant informed the State Legislative Council that the government has decided to form a committee to address this issue.

Samant further stated that the committee will inspect all clinics, hospitals, and complaints, and submit a report to the Maharashtra Legislative Council before the next session, expected to commence in June during the monsoon session.
