The Mumbai Crime Branch, while investigating a threat email sent to Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the email address of the Mumbai NIA office, discovered that the email was sent using the ProtonMail platform, which has servers located in Switzerland. Authorities in Switzerland have a history of not responding to requests regarding customer privacy policies.
Officials have also found that the same email platform was previously used to issue threats regarding a foreign chartered plane carrying a bomb earlier this year, resulting in an emergency landing at Jamnagar Airport and another in Uzbekistan.
Sources have claimed that the sender is taking advantage of the proton mail customer policy and sending multiple threat emails but the authorities are not working on it. According to sources, the email received by the NIA this time shares the same ProtonMail platform, with the email ID registered under the name of Osama Bin Laden's hire. The email reads, "Tumhari sarkar se hume 500 Crore aur Lawrence Bishnoi chahiye nahi to kal hum Narendra Modi ke sath Narendra Modi Stadium bhi uda denge. Hindustan me sab kuchh bikta hai to bhi kuch kharid liya hai, kitna bhi secure karlo, humse nahi bacha paoge. Agar baat karni hai to is mail par hi bat karna."
The NIA has forwarded the email to the Mumbai police for further investigation, and the Crime Branch has taken over the probe to trace the IP address of the email. Sources suggest that the forwarded email has more than 7-8 layers, and the domain is located in Switzerland. The agency has requested the concerned government to gather more details about the email ID. It is worth noting that the same email ID was previously used to issue fake threats of foreign flights carrying explosives earlier this year. The first incident involved a Goa-bound chartered flight from Moscow with 240 passengers, falsely claimed to have a bomb on board, resulting in its diversion to Uzbekistan for an emergency landing. Similarly, another email was received about the same aircraft a few days later, leading to an emergency landing at Jamnagar Defense Airport in Gujarat.
