The Borivali police have arrested a 40-year-old woman for allegedly cheating a tuition teacher and her relative of Rs 2.65 lakh by promising a teaching job and school admissions for their children in a reputed institution.
According to the police sources, the complainant, a 30-year-old victim, used to tutor the accused’s 10-year-old daughter. During this period, the accused, identified as Karishma Jitesh Mehta, allegedly introduced herself as a ‘freelance BMC agent’ and offered the victim a job in a Borivali-based reputed school. The accused also assured admission for the victim’s seven-year-old son.
Following their talks, the accused collected documents from the victim and her relative, and between August 27, 2024, and October 29, 2024, the victims paid R2.65 lakh in multiple transactions (cash and online transfers).
Police said the victim’s cousin, who was also lured into the scam, allegedly paid Rs 1.50 lakh in cash and multiple online transfers after Mehta promised school admissions for his two children. The accused also gave ‘fake’ admission receipts of their children to the victims.
“The victims grew suspicious after Mehta repeatedly postponed the job confirmation and admission dates. On November 11, 2024, they visited the school directly, where the authorities told them that the admission receipts given to them were fake,” said an officer from Borivali police station.
“When confronted, Mehta allegedly gave evasive replies and did not return any money. Following this, the victims approached the Borivli police and lodged a complaint,” added the officer.
The police said that, based on the complaint filed on February 11, 2025, they have booked the accused for cheating and forgery-related offences. She was arrested on Tuesday (November 25) after verifying the allegations and remanded to police custody, said police.
Further investigation is underway to determine whether more people were targeted by the accused, added police.
