A 54-year-old Andheri resident died at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Domestic Airport last morning just as he was making his way out of the airport.

Around 11.10 am, the deceased, identified as Virendra Kumar Singh, who was returning home from a business meeting in Kolkata, collapsed at the airport premises. Authorities said the airport’s medical staff tried to resuscitate him and even rushed him to Nanavati Hospital nearby, but he was declared dead on arrival by the hospital doctors.
Singh’s grief-stricken relatives collected his body from the hospital later in the evening. Speaking to MiD DAY, a relative named Sanjay said, “He called us in the morning, barely half an hour before he collapsed, asking that a car be sent to pick him up from the airport. However, he collapsed right in front of our car, after which our driver alerted the airport staff. The driver then informed us of his collapse.”
Sanjay added that the entire family was shocked, as Singh, a father of two daughters, did not suffer from any heart ailment, and hadn’t undergone any major cardiac surgery in the past. However, he admitted that Singh was a diabetic and suspected that a heart attack could have killed him.
“His last rites might be conducted on Monday,” said Sanjay. Asked about the cause of death, Dr Ashok Hatolkar, medical superintendent of Nanavati Hospital, said, “We cannot comment on the cause of death as only a post-mortem can determine that.”
