A teacher couple from the South Indian Welfare Society College (SIWS) at Wadala has accused the college management of obstructing their planned visit to France to meet their daughter. While the teachers have blamed the college and principal Dr Usha Iyer for non-cooperation, the management has refuted all the charges, instead blaming the former for the mess.
Vaivaswata and Vallari Tulzapurkar have written a letter to the Deputy Director of Education saying that the SIWS principal has not provided them with a six-months salary slip and a No-Objection Certificate (NOC), needed to apply for a visa. Vaivaswata, is an accounting professor, and his wife Vallari, teaches English. In this academic year Vaivaswata had filed an RTI to check if the college was over charging its students for things like identity cards, stationery, etc. &ldquo;We have worked here for the last 25 years. This time, as I have raised my voice against wrongful doings in the college, they are unnecessarily harassing me,&rdquo; said Vaivaswata.
He added, &ldquo;We planned to visit France during my daughter&rsquo;s 15-day Christmas vacation as it&rsquo;s the first time, she will be alone. So, we applied for leave on October 25, and were shocked to hear from the college vice-principal that the new principal has asked her to not accept any application from us. We had to postpone our plan to January. We can&rsquo;t apply for leave post February as that&rsquo;s when exams start.&rdquo; The couple has written two request letters dated November 15 and 24 to the principal, where she assured them they would get their salary slips, but they are yet to receive the same. &ldquo;When we met the principal on November 15, she said that we will be provided with the salary slip, but that for the NOC, she will have to consult with the college management. It&rsquo;s now been three weeks, and we have received neither,&rdquo; said Vaivaswata BB Chavan, Deputy Director of Education, said, &ldquo;As the matter has only come to me on Friday, I have not gone through it. After I do, I will take the required action if needed.&rdquo;
Dr Usha Iyer said, &ldquo;I haven&rsquo;t stopped them from collecting their six-months salary slip. But, for the NOC, I need to consult college management, which takes time. Moreover, when the HSC exams are nearing, how can I allow two professors to go on leave?&rdquo; She added, &ldquo;I had refused to accept their first application as the person concerned who could provide them with their salary slips was on Diwali leave. If it was so urgent, they should have come and met me.&rdquo;
