A complaint was lodged against Mumbai mayor Senhal Ambekar for allegedly insulting the Indian national anthem at Azad Nagar Police Station on Tuesday evening by two Congress corporators.
Devendra Amberkar, BMC opposition leader from the Congress, and corporator Shital Mahtre filed the complaint with Mumbai police.
Amberkar claimed the mayor had stopped the national anthem halfway in the BMC, which according to them was showing disrespect to the national anthem.
Amberkar told mid-day, &ldquo;The audio person started the national anthem in the BMC, but the mayor stopped it halfway. This is insult of the anthem. Hence, we have filed a complaint against the mayor at Azad Maidan police station.&rdquo;
Samajwadi Party corporator Rais Shaikh though disputed the Congress leaders&rsquo; allegations. He said, &ldquo;When the corporators stood up to pay respect to Shahir Sable (Marathi folk legend Krishnarao Sable who passed away last week) in the house, the audio person had started the national anthem suddenly, but the mayor questioned him and asked him to stop it. It&rsquo;s not the mayor&rsquo;s fault and the Congress corporators had anyway walked out of house before the national anthem,&rdquo; he said.
Amberkar admitted that they weren&rsquo;t present in the house at the time of the incident. &ldquo;Mahtre and I were not present in the house at the time the National anthem was played,&rdquo; he said.
