Putting an end to rumours pertaining to the demise of Vada Dasturji Dr Peshotan Mirza — the head priest of Iranshah Atash Behram in Udvada, the holiest of destinations for the Parsi community — his daughter Aban on Saturday told mid-day that her father was stable and resting in the ICU ward of Peddar Road’s Jaslok Hospital.

“Right now, the family is praying for his speedy recovery,” Aban said.

Dr Mirza is one of the two hereditary high priests of the Udvada Atash Behram, considered to be one of the holiest Zoroastrian pilgrimage sites since 1742. The place holds the Iranshah, the ‘throne’ of the sacred 13,000-year-old fire, which is believed to have been burning continuously since the Persian Zoroastrians from Iran, persecuted by Muslim invaders, landed on the shores of Gujarat between the 8th and 9th century.

Vada Dasturji Khurshed Dastoor, the other hereditary high priest of the Udvada Atash Behram, also rubbished the rumours of Dr Mirza’s death. The rumour had started doing the rounds on WhatsApp on Friday evening.

“He was admitted to the hospital around four days ago. But, he had a successful operation and is now showing positive signs of recovery,” he confirmed.

“The patient underwent a surgery and is currently in critical care. He is recovering,” confirmed Dr Tarang Gianchandani, CEO, Jaslok Hospital and Research Center.
