Investigation in a case, wherein a jeweller was robbed of gold ornaments worth Rs 14 lakh, revealed that it was his counterpart who hatched the plot to clear the debts he was neck-deep in, owing to his habit of betting on cricket matches. The probe also exposed that the jeweller who was robbed had lied about the amount of jewellery stolen, so that he could claim extra money from the insurance firm.
P Jain, who owns a shop in Zaveri Bazaar, was attacked by three of the accused on Monday morning while he was on his way to Santacruz station from his Prabhat colony residence. The accused hit Jain on the face with a rod and made away with the bag containing jewellery. A case was registered at the Vakola police station.
