Additional Director General of Police of the Anti-Corruption Bureau, K Subramanyam, a 1976 batch IPS officer, is tipped to take over as the new Director General of Police from October 1, sources from the state government said.

The incumbent DGP Ajit Parasnis will retire on September 30, after completing a three- month extension in the chair, approved by the state government in June.
Sources said that seniority will be the sole criterion for the new DGP's appointment, as neither Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, a Congressman, nor Home Minister RR Patil, who belongs to NCP, are in favour of any other arrangement.
In the recent past, at least two appointments made by the government ran into controversy over the issue of seniority, and were challenged in the court.
Subramanyam will get 10 months as DGP, before he retires in July 2012. After his retirement, Sanjeev Dayal is likely stake a claim to the post on the basis of his seniority.
Dayal will probably get the longest tenure in the DGP's chair, as he is due for retirement in September 2015. It is said that a lobby in the police force was keen to see Dayal as the new DGP, but the CM reportedly refused to violate the norm of ascendancy on the basis of seniority, sources said.

Subramanyam, who had his first posting in Islampur in Sangli district, has spent five years with the vigilance department of Bharat Petroleum. Along with various stints in Pune, Chandrapur, Satara and the Central Bureau of Investigations (CBI), he has spent approximately two decades in Mumbai on various assignments.
