President of the Savarkar Smarak organisation Ranjeet Savarkar, who had taken the initiative to make Dhasai the first cashless village in the country, yesterday distributed card-swiping machines among 40 traders there.
Chasing dreams Finance minister Sudhir Mungantiwar was present on the occasion. &ldquo;Maharashtra has become the first state to take an initiative like this,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;Narendra Modi embarked on the demonetisation drive against black money by banning Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, it&rsquo;s his dream to end corruption. I&rsquo;m glad that in this process Dhasai has become the first cashless village. It&rsquo;s my dream to make Maharashtra the first cashless state in the country. Hence, this is a moment of pride for me.&rdquo;
Savarkar said, &ldquo;This is very inspirational. The government should hold workshops for the villagers to help them get accustomed to the new technology.&rdquo;
Ditching paper money General manager of Bank of Baroda Navtej Singh, who was present for the inauguration, told mid-day, &ldquo;About 40% of the village&rsquo;s traders have got the machines; in the coming days, more will get.&rdquo;
When asked about the tribals who still don&rsquo;t have debit cards to be able to make payments at the shops of these traders, Singh said, &ldquo;As more and more people are becoming aware, requests for cards are increasing. We have set up camps for people who want to get cards; people are lining up for this daily. I would urge everyone to opt for cashless transactions not just via cards, but also through other means, like netbanking and e-wallets.&rdquo;
&ldquo;This shouldn&rsquo;t be just for Maharashtra, but for all districts in all the states,&rdquo; said Mungantiwar, who used his own card and bought Murbad&rsquo;s famous rice and visited another vendor as well.
