Since December, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has carried out demolition of illegal shanties four times in Nargis Dutt Nagar, Bandra (West), after residents of societies around the slum pocket complained of encroachment.

According to the records of the H/West ward office, civic authorities have acted once in December and thrice this month. However, until the past year, resident associations claimed the BMC did not bother to take action when they complained of the new illegal shanties coming up.
Now, authorities have planned to raze more such slum pockets. The ward offices have been asked to get encroachments on roads and footpath cleared on priority basis by the authorities, and about 170-odd structures of such nature have been demolished in Nargis Dutt Nagar alone in the past two- and-a-half months.
MLA raises voice
The local MLA, Ashish Shelar, had raised the issue in the recent Nagpur assembly session about the emergence of new unauthorised shanties and how they would be a disturbance in the rehabilitation of the legal houses as well.
The plot at Nargis Dutt Nagar belongs to MHADA and the planning authority of this land is MMRDA, but as the slum continued to grow with one-plus-one structures being constructed without permissions, the BMC demolished the shanties.
In a joint meeting with the additional municipal commissioner and the local MLA, it was decided to take continuous action against the new illegal shanties in this slum.
