Biker Jagruti Hogale, 35, wanted "to fly", "do something different", and live her life to the fullest. And in pursuing that passion, the mother of an eight-year-old died last morning.
On a trip with two others from their biking club Bikerni, Hogale, while trying to overtake a truck, lost her balance when her bike hit a pothole. The vehicle skid and landed in front of the truck, which ran over its rider and the two-wheeler.

"Why should I stop riding a bike? It's my passion. I feel independent when I am riding... I feel like I am flying. I come from a conservative family; they keep saying 'don't ride a bike, you will fall and break your hands and legs; nobody will marry you'. But I want to do more with my life, something different... I want to live my life to the fullest." This is what Hogale had said in a promotional video of her biking club Bikerni a year ago.

When tragedy rained Early on Sunday, amid a steady morning drizzle, Hogale and two others left their homes for a biking trip to Jawhar. As the trio reached Dahanu-Jawhar Road, in a bid to overtake a truck ahead, Hogale hit a pothole and lost her balance. "The bike skid and she slipped in front of the truck, which ran over her," said Urvashi Pathole, founder of Bikerni.

Eyewitnesses said Hogale was crushed by the truck's rear tyres, sustaining severe head injuries. Passers-by and residents of Kasa village rushed her to a local hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

Superintendent of Palghar police Manjunath Singh said, "The truck driver has been detained and a case under sections 304 (A) (causing death by negligence) and 279 (rash driving) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against him. We have seized the truck and are investigating the cause of her death."

Pathole said, "She was an experienced biker; she had been biking with us for the past three years. She lost her life due to the pothole."
According to Bikerni members, Hogale specialised in medium and long rides. She had covered Leh-Ladakh and even ridden on the world's highest motorable road on Khardung La in Ladakh.
'An athlete and an achiever' Hogale was a resident of Kher Nagar in Bandra East. She is survived by her son and husband, a real estate agent. Her friends said she was also a good dhol player and was associated with Morya Dhol Tasha Pathak. "She was an achiever and an athlete by nature. She used to swim, run marathons and climb mountains. She had enrolled in our classes last year to play dhol," said Ratankant Jagtap, founder of the Pathak.

A relative said, "Jagruti's husband was always behind her, supporting her in all her endeavours. Before they got married, she used to ride a Pulsar and an Activa. After marriage, he had gifted her a Bullet."
