Mulund police are on the lookout for a constable from Chunabhatti police station after a local dairy owner registered a case of cheating against him.
Police officials said constable Niwas Patil duped Ramkumar Jaiswal of Rs 25 lakh on the pretext of getting him two MHADA flats through his contacts and is on the run since Tuesday, the day a First Information Report (FIR) was registered against him.
Speaking to mid-day, Jaiswal said, &ldquo;I had been delivering milk at his Mulund police camp residence since the time he was with Mulund police. We knew each other personally. Later, my nephew started delivering milk at his residence. He once broached the topic of purchasing a MHADA flat and asked Patil whether he had any contacts so that it could be purchased at a cheaper rate.
Patil claimed he knew certain officials in MHADA who could help us buy two flats for Rs 25 lakh. Assuming it to be a golden opportunity, we sold our farm and two properties in Rajasthan, and raised money to buy MHADA flats in Mulund.&rdquo;
Jaiswal said since Patil was a police employee, there was no question of doubting his integrity. With a span of five months October 18, 2012 to March 21, 2013 Jaiswal gave Patil Rs 21.75 lakh. As months went by, Jaiswal started asking for a refund when things failed to progress beyond Patil&rsquo;s initial commitment of getting him two MHADA flats for cheap.
However, Patil kept on making false promises that the work was in progress, and Jaiswal would be refunded if the deal crashed midway. Upon realising that he had been taken for a ride, Jaiswal finally filed a complaint with the Mulund police.
An officer from Mulund police station said, &ldquo;A month ago, Jaiswal had complained in writing following which we summoned the constable. Patil said he would return the money and later gave Jaiswal three cheques of Rs 5 lakh each, which bounced. After a thorough investigation, an FIR was filed against Patil on Tuesday.&rdquo;
Another official said that upon learning about the FIR, Patil applied for anticipatory bail on Tuesday, which was rejected, and has been on the run since. He has been booked under Section 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) of the Indian Penal Code.
