A 63-year-old from south Mumbai was cheated of around Rs 57 lakh in his endeavour to exchange old currency notes. The senior citizen has filed a case with the Byculla police station.
A report in the <a href="http://www.hindustantimes.com/mumbai-news/63-year-old-tries-to-exchange-old-notes-cheated-of-rs57l-in-sobo/story-GdJMhHzGERn1bzmr9lXisL.html" target="_blank">Hindustan Times</a> stated that the businessman named Siraj Dalal was cheated by Meeraj Ali and three of his associates. In his complaint to the police, Dalal said, &ldquo;I wanted to buy a new house for which I wanted to change my old Rs 500 and Rs1,000 notes. So I met Ali through one of my relative&rsquo;s employees, Oan Ali, who accompanied me along with my son to Mustafa Bazar for the meeting on November 12.&rdquo; The report further added that Ali arrived for the meeting with three more people in a car.
The four apparently told Dalal that they can&rsquo;t exchange the currency, but can aid him in buying a new house using the old notes. But, for that he would have to pay the money that day itself as the second party wanted it. &ldquo;They told us to keep the money in their car and asked us to go and sit in another car parked a few metres ahead,&rdquo; Dalal&rsquo;s complaint further read.
The <a href="http://www.hindustantimes.com/mumbai-news/63-year-old-tries-to-exchange-old-notes-cheated-of-rs57l-in-sobo/story-GdJMhHzGERn1bzmr9lXisL.html" target="_blank">HT</a> report added that after Dalal kept the money in the first car, he began walking towards the other car. However, the car left before he could make it while the other car also took a U-Turn and fled. Dalal informed the cops that tried contacting the four over mobile for the next couple of days, but failed to get in touch. &ldquo;We even went to Ali&rsquo;s residence in south Mumbai, but there was no one at home, which is when we approached the police,&rdquo; Dalal was quoted as saying in the <a href="http://www.hindustantimes.com/mumbai-news/63-year-old-tries-to-exchange-old-notes-cheated-of-rs57l-in-sobo/story-GdJMhHzGERn1bzmr9lXisL.html" target="_blank">HT</a> report.
A case has been registered against the four under sections 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
