At 12 pm on Friday night, Amit Bhase, a police informer and Mira Road Youth Congress leader Prem Tambe posed as policemen and stopped Vipul Patel on the Ghatkopar Link Road, asking him to show the contents of his bag, in which he was carrying Rs 10,000. Patel got suspicious and refused. When Patel tried to call the Pant Nagar police station, the duo roughed him up. Two beat marshals, who were patrolling the area took the duo to the police station, where they admitted that three others were involved in their con-job.

The police found Sharad Gavkar, a police constable attached to the Charkop Police station, Rajesh Chavan, a constable with the Oshiwara police station and Santosh Kondikar, who was carrying an identity card of India Breaking News, in a Maruti Zen, parked on the link road. A mic with the fake logo of Aaj Tak, fake press cards and a pair of handcuffs were seized from the car.

"We are investigating if they have been involved in other crimes. They have been arrested under sections 420 and 170 of IPC," said Assistant Police Inspector NM Kasar from Pant Nagar police station.
