In a significant development, Akasa Air on Friday announced a partnership with Adani Airport Holdings Ltd (AAHL) to operate commercial flights from Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA).

Last month, IndiGo airlines had announced that it will be beginning commercial flight operations from the Navi Mumbai airport from November.

The airline had said said it aims to connect more destinations across India and abroad from NMIA, providing greater access for passengers and helping India move closer to becoming the third largest aviation market by 2030.

Akasa Air will launch with over 100 domestic departures per week, scaling up to more than 300 domestic and 50 international weekly flights by the winter schedule.

Speaking on the development, Akasa Air’s founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Vinay Dube said, “Our foray into Navi Mumbai International Airport is a strategic step aligned with Akasa Air’s long-term vision to build a future-ready airline that is responsive to the evolving needs of Indian travellers. No airline in India will have a larger percentage of its fleet and operations based out of NMIA than Akasa Air.”

He added that the enhanced connectivity from NMIA would not only fortify Akasa’s network across western India but would also stimulate regional growth, unlock new demand centres, and support sustainable expansion across the country.

The partnership is also part of Akasa Air’s broader network strategy, which includes the establishment of 10 parking bases by the end of FY2027 and a focused international expansion into key Middle Eastern and Southeast Asian markets.

AAHl CEO Arun Bansal said, “We are pleased to welcome Akasa Air as one of the inaugural airline partners at Navi Mumbai International Airport. Their rapid growth and forward-looking approach make them an ideal partner in NMIA’s journey to becoming a key domestic and international hub.”

NMIA, designed as a state-of-the-art aviation facility, is poised to become a premier global gateway. In its initial phase, it will have the capacity to handle 20 million passengers and 0.5 million metric tonnes (MMT) of cargo annually, with a future expansion target of 90 million passengers and 3.2 MMT of cargo.

As operations shift and expand into NMIA, the burden on the existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) is likely to ease.
